Saw in the motoring yesterday that VW are launching the new polo in SA. Will also be manufactured here. Gonna cost about the same as the old one (for the petrol) 183 000 for the 1.6 comfortline and looks a lot like a Golf6 from the front. They seem to have a 1.6tdi putting out 77kW for 220 000. I know they call it polo5, i count 4 :P

Looks really good, and seems like a lot of car for its price!!

For an entry level car the price is very high. (for SA's 1.4 and 1.6 engine). Factor insurance and a service plan for the first year and it's a hefty little amount to pay making it rather a mid level car.

Ford Ka is an entry level car.

I'd take a 2.0l Cerato for cheaper than one of these old-engined Polos.

Polo is NOT an entry level car!

Yes a crappy Ka is, just as a Chery or a Picanto. The VW entry level is the car that is replacing the old Citi.

What amazes me about some people on this forum is that they will moan and bitch about Polo prices all day and ignore the fact that a Ford Bantam can cost you over R 170 000....and that's a bloody bakkie, for Pete's sake!

I don't have to be a VW fanboi to see that there are a hell of a lot of very skewed views against VAG. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't in most of your eyes.

Yea I agree with Fazda. Not entry level. Lots of talk of a Lupo or fox coming in to take over from the Mk1 golf. Also wasn't the ford Ka discontinued over safety concerns ?? just like the tazz, corsa lite and now the citi ?

I had the misfortune of driving a Ka...once...not a pleasant experience!

Apparently the Citi will be replaced by a stripped down version of the present Polo, which would suit me just fine thank you! :D

You sound like a fanboy(just an unbiased observation) - always rushing to there defense and this isn't a thread about a bantam, last time there was one it also got slagged. I personally like the polo also but I feel I could get way better for the price.

I like the look of the new polo, but I sure as hell WON'T be buying one...

Its not worth R180k... Its worth at most R130k in my opinion.. and even that is pushing it.

Like??

Compare to the 1.6 comfortline at 184 000. We have the following competitors.

There is the i20 which is 170k for the 1.6 plus it comes with a motorplan, but i rate out of plan the parts on service is quite insane i hear. Also the i20 is quite a odd looking car. Other 1.6 models:

Corsa 1.6 (only sport 1.6 available on website) 220 000.

Ford Fiesta 1.6 is 196 000 (top of the range fiesta is what will compete with the comfortline).

Took a look at the new clio 1.6, base model but it has everything in it. Climate control etc, for 195 000. Not bad actually since it also has a 3 year/45 000 service plan... Think this is quite a value for money car, but what are these other options out there that are SO MUCH better than a polo at the same price point? Please show me...

i20 odd looking? thats your perception. Very highly rated car. Hyundai parts way cheaper than Toyota etc. Only reason Polo parts cheap is because they are from the Citi Golf. I20 is only R160k with motorplan and will go forever..

Kia Cerato 1.6 R179k / 2.0 R199k quickest 2.0l car in pricerange, great motorplan, Full house features, Toyota quality.
Chev Cruze R174k
1.6 Fiesta R169k

Not to mention 2nd hand.

And 120 000 kms.

nope, usually 40-70k mileage... you have to shop around though
*edit*
for a little more, +-190k you can pick up a 2006 C180 Merc or a 2006 E90 BMW 320i from the dealers, usually with full service history etc.. far better value for money than a middle of the range polo/kia/toyota etc

i guess it comes down to what the individual wants for his/her money

Yip those prices are crazy. Id take the polo thank you! 21 months ago i paid R190 for a PGTi with s/roof. leather. smash n grab. extended warranty. service plan. boot strip. glazing and brand new! I think the new polos are well priced compared to the competition.
