I've just taken the new Sandero for a test drive and I have to say that I'm impressed. It's one of those cars that are not going to light up the sky for other road users, so isn't an item to show off, but for the >R141k price tag, it's about the best value in a new car that I can see if you're after:
  • Above average space for it's class - 292l boot capacity and spacious inside
  • 66kw Turbo engine - same as the Clio - not the fastest but plenty of pull for day to day use
  • Bluetooth, aircon, ABS, EBD, ESP, ASR, cruise control, speed limiter, etc
  • 6.4-3.4l/100km cycle (not real world I bet, but still)

The interior is pretty decent and it's a comfortable ride on gravel with above average clearance. For the family type who occasionally need to venture onto gravel or uneven roads without worrying about doing the car in, it's a well priced vehicle.

It really is a new vehicle when compared with the previous model. Far more refined inside and a way better motor... also pretty economical on the component replacement costs.

hmmm the expression model comes without aircon , if i spend 120k on a car better damn have basic stuff like aircon :P

but looks really nice and dynamique has some nice stuff extras etc

The old one was the worst car I have ever driven.
If a rental company ever tried to give me one then I made them change it.

I asked about that and they said the air con model just isn't available so the starting price is R133k with air con.
Dynamique is good value for a little extra.

You got what you paid for I bet... Besides, the old and new are two fairly different beasts. The turbo makes a difference. Thread is about the NEW car.

Yeh lol that is hilarious - captain slow hehehe. I'd like to hear their take on the new one.

This doesn't actually look like a Renault?

I mean the previous car was a pathetic excuse but having a Dacia built French car, I don't know I would rather get a VW Vivo that you can sell 3 years later for R10-20 less than what you bought it for, not like 50% what you bought it for...

It really depends on what you plan to do with it. Resale will likely be low, but pure value for cash in terms of what you get it isn't bad at all honestly. The vivo would have much higher insurance premiums anyway so the resale gap would be a good bit smaller.

Not sure what you mean by doesn't look like a Renault, but when last have you climbed into one? Even last years Clio Yahoo 1.6 with 88kw motor knocks the socks off the VW equivalent. Renault have really turned a corner IMO. Resale value I'm not familiar with tho. What's the retail on the Vivo? I should really take a look.

As for the previous model being a Dacia built French car, I think it was more a Dacia badged french built car. They were both a fair combination of solid and economical... No sexy trims but good value nonetheless. It won car of the year in europe for a reason IMO.

Thanks for the heads up. Ill take a look regardless.

I have to say we have a Vivo Sedan 1.4 and it is cheap to maintain (service) and parts are locally manufactured. Insurance companies also consider things like sourcing of parts (for Sandero) because the exchange rate and availability of such parts could affect their job if you do claim as they are parts which are imported.

The Vivo is (last year at least) the no. 1 selling car in SA. This definitely has certain indirect benefits like mentioned above. For me I would rather have a more dull featureless car like the Vivo, but have other factors like resale value, parts availability (the previous polo parts are compatible and no1 selling car make them very available), huge dealer network, solid engine (especially with our fuel grade) etc.

I am currently on my 3rd VW. In 2010 I bought a Tenaciti 1.4 off the showroom floor for R90k, after almost exactly two years the same dealer sold it for R90k after I traded it in.

Maybe a good advice would be to get insurance quotes before you buy your car. This will help you as some cars get high premiums for being high risk etc.

I apologize if it sounded like I'm bashing the vivo as I'm not. I really like the vivo in fact, was just pointing out that in terms of extras the Sandero has it beat.

As I said earlier, it really depends on what a person is looking for in a car. If they plan on keeping it permanently for example resale isn't as much of an issue, if they plan to trade in after three years it will matter a lot etc.

.....

Parts are made in Rosslyn, Pretoria, Nissan plant.

Ditto. I love the Vivo, it's just more expensive overall and not, spacious and has a lower ride height - I want to be able to travel a gravel road without worrying about the bottom of the vehicle.

I am hoping that what Renault are doing is going to spark a feature and price war. The motor industry is due for an overhaul.

That looks very nice indeed!

I'm glad they've jacked the Sandero up as the old one was not worth a second look - this one, however, is a very different story!

Probably not the previous model as a new car, but a used low mileage one is worth a second look IMO. For around R85k you can get one with under 50k on the clock and around 3 years old. For the size vehicle, it's a nice affordable option for a family of 4.
