New router or keep my B315

So lately I've been seeing the Huawei B222(outdoor LTE router) pop up here and there. I'm kind of interested but is it worth moving from a B315 to it?
I usually get around 35-42Mbps when on router decides to play nice and connect to the right tower with the following stats:
RSRP: 100dB
RSRq: -4
SINR: 7

You could always add an external antenna to what you already have? What speed are you targeting, and what do you need the higher speeds for?

I can add an antenna. But I'm just looking at other options just in case. I need the extra speed because there's a number of people connected online at once and the speed sometimes is not adequate.

Judging by your signal stats already, you will not see much improvement. You already have good speed, and are likely getting the maximum the cell/tower can deliver. Improving your signal does not improve the capacity/congestion on the tower.

That might be true but there's a tower about 2.5km away from me and I got curious one day so I went to where it is with my rain sim in my phone. When I was about 6 houses away from it, I did a speed test and got 80Mbps DL speed. But for some reason, my router at home refuses to connect to that tower and always chooses the one that's further away. I believe maybe an antenna might help.

Yeah in this case it might, since a directional antenna will allow you to aim precisely. Your router does not allow PCI locking, but provided that the tower/cell you aim at gives the best signal, your router should stay connected to it.
 
Sorry, actually the B222 may allow PCI locking, not sure. The B315 does not.

What I can tell you is the B2338 does allow PCI locking, so I just play musical chairs with cells - when one gets crap I aim to another and lock if the speed is better.
 
The only problem you might have is if your current tower sits between you and the other tower you want to point to it might grab that signal.

Have a look at the following stats. This might help you with your current stats.

The directional antenna will improve your stats but the speed improvement will be a gamble...

1. An antenna always helps, even with the tower less than 500m away. Irrespective of the theories around this, I get consistent and fast throughput. Take the antenna away and it goes to hell.
2. The B315 is an underpowered piece of kit. I've now set it up as a gateway only, with an Ethernet connection to another access router, and WiFi (and almost everything else) disabled entirely. The access router handles the wired devices (NAS, HTPC) and also WiFi (dual band which the B315 can't do). This takes almost all the load off the B315 and that seems to help the performance as well.

Which access router and antenna are you using? And is it connected in LAN-WAN configuration?

I'm using an (under-powered entry level) TP-link Archer AC20, connected across the LAN ports. No reason for using this, apart from the fact that it was lying around unused.

If you're going to get another router, get one that has a directional antenna. Having said that I got great results using an XPOL-6 with my B311As until Rain sent me the B2338.

I would be willing to sell the XPOL-6 since I no longer use it...

So you're saying you got better results from using the B2338 compared to an antenna and a normal router?
 
After a little digging, turns out no store sells the B2223 version, they only have the inferior B222s.

Not really. I just ended up mounting the B2338 cos i had it anyway and it allows PCI locking, which the B311 does not. Signal and speed-wise it's about the same, the difference now is i can lock to the exact cell I choose, no need to worry about the router auto-connecting to a nearby cell.
