New Saps regulations expected for drivers crossing SA borders

JOHANNESBURG – Each Christmas tens of thousands of Zimbabweans head across the border in their South African-registered cars.

But now, South African travel operators are warning of new South African Police Service regulations for drivers taking cars across the border.
The new requirements cover all South African border posts including Beitbridge.

Travel and tourism operators say that any driver of a SA-registered car will need to carry certified copies of vehicle registration and licence papers, to be presented at border posts.

This is nothing new, I drive a company car and have been asked many times for a copy of the vehicle registration papers and a letter from the company giving me permission to cross the borders into Swaziland and Botswana.
On one occasion I didn't have said papers and had to phone my company to fax the documents through to the police at the border before they would let me through.

A way to get them to pay e-tolls before they sod off ?

People leaving need only get a letter from their bank stating that they are authorised to remove the vehicle and for what period - where the vehicle is financed.

Vehicles not financed would not require a letter obviously but then the owner would be in possession of the original natis.
