Not sure if anyone has mentioned this - it seems quite significant to me.

THE national government has raised the bar for pupils up to Grade 8 with new pass marks that have been met with a mixed response in Eastern Cape. Critics fear the tougher standards will result in more children failing in their formative years, while others argue it is necessary for the quality of education to improve.

Teacher unions are up in arms over new pass requirements for grades 1 to 9, which they say will result in large numbers of pupils failing this year.

Currently you just have to pitch & write your name on the paper to pass.

Today's kids think that you just need a character editor and give your life max stats and attribs, then you will be ok. Hard work is so boring and there are so many methods of putting the blame on others.

Sooo they should at least have a 50% pass rate!

heh, that is what it was in my days. under 50 and you do not make it, if you fail any of the main subjects at end of the year like english, afrikaans and maths you failed totally. ( not sure of that still applies )

its allmost to funny to think that then you had to spell correctly or suffer. maybe make it like the microsoft exams, 65% is pass rate ;)

Lotta burned down schools in our near future!

It still is like that or used to be last year, You had to get 40% for languages, 30% for math ( LOL) and 40% for life orientation (basic knowledge about sex and aids should get you a distinction)
if you failed either one of these you failed. (at least that is what they told us_
