New shocks

I took my car in for a service and they tld me my shocks were gone. It's also 3 months out of warranty and as I'd have to pay myself, I could them much cheaper at Mr Exhaust or one of those places.

Is there a brand that I should look for? Anything I should avoid? Or are they all very similar?
 
Get Bilsteins. They are the best by far IMO. They cost more, but you don't replace them when they're worn. They simply service the ones you have and put them back on the car.
 
Rough indication of price?

Toyota said through them they're charge R3,500.00 but I'd get half price elsewhere .... so I was thinking under R2,000.00?
 
on my old opel i put on monroe shocks, but only for the fronts - it cost me something like 1k iirc...

...how many km's does your car have on?

are you sure the shocks are shot?
 
Total thumbsuck, but I reckon Bilsteins will prolly be around R6k.
 
R6k is too much :/

60,000km ... Toyota service said the one shock is leaking and it does feel more twitchy than usual on the bends.

I'll ask the 3rd party guys if it does indeed
 
Moly crap! :eek: 60 000km? I've got almost 120 000 on my coupe and mine are still fine, even with some "spirited driving". When I need to replace them, I'll put on some Koni FSDs. A little pricey but DAMN! They're practically perfect!
 
Eish!! 6k for shocks...

I just replaced the front of my bakkie with gabriels (boring I know) and that cost be R900 at SupaQuick. So for all four R1800.
 
Yea - 60,00km is way too soon, I know :/

You are definately wrong. Dolby sure doesnt want to fit Coilovers or even high performance sports shocks, he just wants the standard shocks which cost around R2k. The last time i fitted Bilsteins on my VR6 it costed me R1800for the sports shocks.

OP: Also dont be fooled when they tell you it can be serviced, cos it will only last a month or two and they end up giving you trouble. Not worth the hassle imo.

If you dont mind me asking, on which car will you be fitting FSD's ?
 
:eek: I'm still on original shocks on the Fazda after 208000 km!!!!!!!!!

Agree with BCO on the Bilsteins particularly if they do not cost a telephone number. They are guaranteed for ever. I used to rally with them and did 4 seasons on one set, before totalling the car and the shocks at the same time. Bilstein checked them every year and they were still 100% up until the moment they died.
 
60k?? yikes, shocks from what i've heard should last to 100-160k (changed the ones on my opel on 150k), but i reckon do the bounce test...if you push down hard on your car, and it bounces righrt back up, then they should still fine, if press down and release and bounces quite a few times, then its time to upgrade (i could be wrong on this, but saw this advice on tv once)...

...maybe your problem is more linked to the balancing and allignment of the tyres??
 
Monroe's, Armstrong, Gabriel are all good brands. Just make sure it is the shock and not something else before replacing them. Maybe you hit a pothole or curb when driving that damaged it?

erm, if you read my post correctly, i said 99.9% :rolleyes:
also you fail to understand that rally suspension has f-all to do with every day road cars and so does 'lowered with bilsteins'.

Also to the OP, there is absolutely no reason for you to fit suspension like Bilstein/Koni/Tein/H&R/Eibach to a 'normal' vehicle.
 
Depends on the car how much shocks cost but Coil Overs usually cost around 6K.

Did you fit mags to your car or perhaps bigger calipers, pads & brakes? That could be the reason your shocks only lasted 60 000km, because the unsprung weight increases causing increased wear on the shocks. Can also be because you lowered to the car but 60 000km seems a bit harsh, guess it possible if you are one of those people who drive over speed bumps like they don't exist (in that case you're up for far more maintenance).

Anyway you don't really have to fit anything special imho, I fitted Gabriel Gasryders on my car and it works perfectly fine, the ride is just as soft as it was with the standard shocks.
