New shocks

Thread resurrection...

So I took my little Polo in for a service today at a LindsaySaker and they want to charge me:
R2850 for front brakes, disk & pads.
R2000 for back pads (they drum breaks)
R1900 for 2 back shocks, they say the one is leaking.

Car is on 90000km's so i can understand they should be worn out, but the pricing looks a little steep to me?
I wanna take it for a 2nd and 3rd opinion. What places should I look at and brands?

I was thinking of just going straight for Gabriel and Ferodo?

If im not mistaken i changed my shocks on a golk mk1 for like r700 fitted and they said that either monroe or gabriel is better than the other

cant recall now

but thats VW dealerships prices

you can get it cheaper done

You can easily get aftermarket pads and shocks. No way would I go to Sakers for that.
lol no i booked it in for it's standard 90000km's service.

But in addition to that they said the above needed replacing. So I told them to leave it alone, I'll take it to another place for the brakes and shocks.

Replaced the shocks on my Focus at 80 000km, cost me R2800 at SupaQuick.

At 90 000km Ford said it was going to cost R2200 to change the pads and skim the front discs, and R1800 to do the same for the rear. My friend got the same price for the front pads and skim discs on his Fiesta.

No one ever said owning a car is cheap, thats why taxis use cardboard pads. :p

I don't mind paying to maintain the car. But I don't like paying inflated prices.

Just changed front disks and pads for Astra 2005. It cost R1100 discs and pads Ferodo. Did it myself +- 10 mins job

Monroe and Armstrong are manufactured by the same company. Pricing and quality the same but Monroe gives a longer warranty. I think it was either a 3 or 5 year warranty for Monroes.

Wow prices seem to have gone up since I started this ;)

I see I paid 1250.00 30 months ago

Yeah, 10 mins is too short, even 20. Or maybe you did not treat the hub to a good cleaning before putting on the new disk. Most shops don't do it leading to premature disk replacement. My last replacement took me about an hour at least. And lastly don't forget about torquing the bolts to spec.

Ok maybe not 10 mins but definitely not longer than 20 mins :D

You can't do it in 20 mins either.

You have to:
1. Degrease the new discs you purchased (please tell me you did this :) )
2. Loosen wheel nuts
3. Jack up the car (probably one side only depending on jack)
4. Remove wheel nuts and wheel.
5. Remove caliper bolt, swing caliper back & remove pads. Remove entire caliper.
6. Remove disc screws/bolts & disc
7. Reverse of 6
8. Reverse of 5
9. Reverse of 4
10. Reverse of 3
11. Reverse of 2
12-22 Now go and repeat this whole procedure on the other side of the car.

Degreasing may not be necessary depending on the discs purchased right?

Not sure but I would assume they are all covered in a layer of oil to prevent rust build up during storage. I have never encountered 'clean' discs but that does not mean they don't exist.

The last set I put on had some other coating that protected the disc. It was not oil based and came off after a few normal braking actions on the pedal. I am referring to the powerbrake disc.

I'm talking the 'rotors', not the pads, just in case we are referring to different things here :)

Our cars are imported from Japan, and the discs are coated with a clear coat to prevent rusting. This burns off within the first 50 odd k's. Only had one drama with a customer phoning me about ten minutes after taking delivery, and saying that his brakes had caught fire....of course it was just the clear coat burning off and the fact that he had obviously been braking too hard which led to quite a bit of smoke!
