Hi,

Does anyone know if the new sim cards will work in an iPad (assuming you have coverage)? I'm thinking of buying an iPad, as the data usage component should now be cheaper.

Two issues I've identified :-
1. I'm under the impression that the iPad requires a larger SIM card?
2. The tech specs I've found on the iPad 3G support states 850 UMTS, not 900 UMTS (which is Cell C standard?)

Thanx

Both MTN and Vodacom (and the others too, I think) have imported micros-sims for use in devices like the ipad. They're smaller than normal, not larger.

...and if push comes to shove you can also cut down a standard sim to microsim size. The contacts are the same it's just the plastic around it that's different. There are lots of tips on how to do this on the net.

Ok, so cutting to size is then possible.

UMTS 850 vs 900? Will the iPad work with full speed on the new Cell C network?

you can buy a little gadget off the net that will trim your normal sim card to micro-sim size which will work in the ipad.

Hi Bodo

The only requirement for an iPad is a MicroSIM (small form factor version of the current SIM). The size (memory) of the SIM is unimportant but ours are 128k – the same as all of our new SIMs. Currently the iPad only supports EDGE (as mentioned above - which will work on our network) and UMTS 850 & 2100. We expect the IOS 4 upgrade due in the next few weeks to address this and add UMTS 900 support (same as the iPhone 4).
Let's hold thumbs.

That would be fantastic. I hope it's not a hardware limitation.

CellC, are you sure the new IOS4 will enable the current iPad to support 900mhz UMTS? I can't find any mention of it, not even for operators that use 900mhz now such as New Zealand's?

Hi q12485
Unfortunately we cannot be sure of this, but it has been rumoured in the industry. So don't quote us on this. :)

I'm skeptical about this. However it would be wonderful news since we just got my grandpa a 3G iPad. We'll have to wait and see I guess. However I'm sure the next gen iPad (next April) will support 900Mhz UMTS for sure.

Add 900MHz via a software upgrade - HA HA HA HA HA HA - that is funny!!!!! NO, it will NOT happen!!
The iPad works on GSM/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz and UMTS/HSDPA 850, 1900, 2100 MHz. So no UMTS 900 MHz (maybe on the next model).
In Australia for example, all networks use UMTS 2100 MHz in built-up city areas (so that works on the iPad) and then half the networks use UMTS 850 MHz in rural areas whereas the other half use 900 MHz in rural areas. So, depending on what network you using there, you either will or won't have 3G in outlying areas. Unfortunately Cell C will have no 3G access for iPad users in smaller towns using 900 MHz, they will probably only have 3G access for iPads in the major cities with 2100 MHz (assuming Cell C will be using 2100 MHz in major cities - would be real stupid to use 900 MHz in a major city)...

The new CellC 4Gs SIMs don't work in the iPad or iPhone 3GS, only the iPhone 4. I've tested this, I had thought that a R999 2gb per month SIM might be ideal for my iPad but not luck. Only get Edge with the SIM in the iPad. It however give me 4mbs speed on my HTC and iPhone4

That's because the iPad doesn't support UMTS 900 MHz whereas the iPhone 4 does...
