Brabus enters electric vehicle market with #1 Brabus and Brabus EQS

Brabus is the second largest tuner of Mercedes-Benz after AMG. The company was founded in 1977 and is responsible for some of the most outrageous creations like the 900 horsepower G-Wagon. The company modifies Smart cars and Maybach as well and just like the AMG, it is getting closer to the Mercedes-Benz brand.

Big tuner houses are quick on spotting and securing opportunities, they have their markets cornered and know their customers really well. When Smart announced its #1 - the first new Smart in a while - Brabus was quick to jump in and seal the deal. The result is the first production Brabus Smart #1 that will be sold through dealership networks across the globe.

#1 Brabus is going to be a sole performance version of the Smart #1 and it will be officially unveiled on August 26 at the Chengdu Motor Show in China. We first spotted the performance version back in April but didn’t realize it was going to be branded as Brabus.

2023 Smart Smart #1 Brabus unveiled in China

Smart #1 Brabus hasn’t been a secret for a while now, we’ve seen it many times before and even recently, Smart itself revealed the car in its full glory. Not all details were confirmed though, there was still speculation about the exact power output from its two electric motors and last but definitely not least, there was no information about its price.

Smart did not delay any longer and finally and officially unveiled the car at the Chengdu Motor Show in China. Without further ado - the power output is confirmed at 422 hp combined. The front motor has 154 hp and 200 Nm of torque while the rear motor pushes 268 hp and 343 Nm of torque. The combined figure for torque is 543 Nm. Those numbers itranslate to a blistering 3.7 seconds sprint from 0 to 100 kph.

Those numbers make the Smart #1 Brabus faster than Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, Lamborghini Murcielago and Lamborghini Diablo. This city car that wants to be a crossover is as fast as Ferrari 360 Modena and equals Tesla Model Y with which it is most likely to compete for the customers.

2023 Smart #1 EV gets high-performance overhaul by Brabus

German tuning firm adds four-wheel drive and Tesla Model Y-rivalling performance to compact crossover

The Smart #1 Brabus has been revealed at the Chengdu motor show in China, featuring a huge boost to performance and sportier styling courtesy of the famed German tuner.

The biggest difference between the #1 Brabus and the standard #1 is the addition of a second electric motor at the front, giving the electric crossover four-wheel drive.

Partnered with the existing 268bhp motor at the rear, it boosts the total power output to 422bhp, meaning the #1 can now dispatch a 0-62mph sprint in just 3.9sec.

That’s just behind the Tesla Model Y Performance (0-60mph in 3.5sec) and the Kia EV6 GT (0-62mph in 3.5sec).

However, while the Model Y Performance and EV6 GT start north of £60,000, the #1 Brabus will launch at ¥279,000 (£34,500) in China. Although Smart is yet to detail UK pricing for the Brabus, it’s expected to be significantly more affordable than other high-performance EVs.

The #1 Brabus retains the standard car’s 66kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery, which provides an official 273-mile range. This is likely to be reduced in the Brabus, given its higher power output and additional driven wheels.

China is getting another Smart #1 version on November 18

The new all-electric Smart #1 recently launched in China and in Europe and its Chinese lineup is getting a new member. The existing two models - Pro+ and Premium - are getting a new sibling, the Pulse.

Smart is jointly owned by Mercedes and Geely and the car has been built on the SEA platform provided by Geely. The design of the vehicle was handled by Mercedes and the car is manufactured in China by Geely.

The new Pulse version can be distinguished by its black accents - the lower trim around the entire car and the standard 19” wheels have gloss black finish. The top part of the car - the roof and the pillars are all finished in gloss black. The body colors are vivid and bright and the combination is very contrasting making the car look fresh and dynamic.

The interior comes in black and silver - even the headliner is trimmed with black alcantara. The sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel is wrapped in leather and finished with red stitching for contrast.

New Smart #3 SUV leaked ahead of full 2023 reveal

Electric coupé-SUV upscales the Smart line-up into Volkswagen ID 4 territory

The next step in Smart’s electric evolution has been leaked online, with the firm set to introduce a coupé-SUV model that's much larger than the recently introduced Smart #1.

Badged the Smart #3, the sleek model was posted on Instagram by CocheSpias and sports similar styling to the smaller #1.

The car shown clearly resembles the design of the #1, with a similar front fascia and a headlamp-to-headlamp light bar.

A near-identical set-up has also been applied to the car's rear, although the roof is far more rakish-shaped than its smaller counterpart's.

According to information leaked out of China, the #3 measures around 4400mm long, 1800mm wide and 1600mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2785mm.

That makes it similar in size to the Volkswagen ID 4, which for reference is 4584mm long, 1852mm wide and 1637mm tall.

The #3 is expected to be fitted with a choice of two motor set-ups that deliver similar power outputs to the smaller #1.

Basic models will feature a single motor with 268bhp and 252lb ft of torque. The line-up is likely to be topped by a Brabus-badged performance variant, with two electric motors providing a hefty power boost over the standard variant.

It’s also rumoured the #3 will weigh between 1870kg and 1890kg, depending on the powertrain.

The Geely-Daimler owned Smart is on a roll. The Smart #1 was only just unveiled with the majority of markets only to receive deliveries at the beginning of next year and the company already has a second model coming.

Thanks to the Chinese vehicle homologation authority we now have detailed photos of the upcoming mid-sized electric SUV - the Smart #3. It looks more like a coupe-SUV with its back nicely sculpted towards the rear - does that mean there is a Smart #2 that’s more of a classic SUV?

The similarities between the Smart #1 and Smart #3 are quite obvious - same headlights and tail lights design, the #3 is obviously bigger - at 4.4 meters it is 13 cm longer than its smaller sibling but it has the same width and height. The low height again suggests there is another Smart under development - possibly #2 or #5.

The homologation paperwork mentions another version of the #3 that’s 4.5 meters long. It isn’t a long-wheel base model though, the filing mentions “a special indexing device” that extends the rear overhang of the car to 971mm and as a result, the overall length goes up to 4,542mm. What is the “special indexing device”? If anyone knows, please leave a comment.

Smart #1 aced Euro NCAP test with 5 stars and 96% score

Smart #1 has been unveiled earlier this year and so far it received a very warm welcome, its Launch Edition has been sold out on the spot with deliveries not starting until early next year. In final stages of launch preparations for the EU market, Smart #1 was crash tested by Euro NCAP and the results are really good.

The car is built in China by a Mercedes and Geely joint venture and it is designed by Mercedes but engineered by Geely. The car is based on the SEA platform used in Zeekr 001, the same platform will underpin Volvo’s upcoming small SUV and it will form the base of Izera Z100 and T100 as well.

The Euro NCAP awarded Smart #1 with a full 5 stars safety rating. Many new cars score high results in the crash tests due to advancements of safety technology, nevertheless it is good to see the city crossover offer good protection to its occupants. What is even more important, despite its size being on a rather small side of things, Smart #1 scored a very respectable 96% in adult passenger protection.

To put that in perspective - the much larger Tesla S scored 94%, much newer Tesla Model Y got an even better 97% score. On the other end of the scale is Nissan Ariya with 86% and even Toyota bZ4X scored lowly 88%. Those seemingly small differences can mean walking away with bruises from a smash or needing hospital treatment.

This Off-Road Brabus Smart ForTwo Is Wrong in the Best Way Possible

Does anyone need a lifted off-road ForTwo? Absolutely not. But you know you'd love to drive it.

The Smart ForTwo was never cool in the same way the Porsche 911 is cool, but you’ve got to respect the decision to build a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive city car that may as well be a Vespa with a roof. And if you live in a dense urban area with limited parking but insist on owning a car, it’s a solid, practical choice. An off-road ForTwo? That makes no sense. It’s just wrong. And yet, we can’t help but love the idea.

This particular off-road Smart ForTwo is currently for sale on Cars & Bids has a three-inch lift kit, 15-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, flared wheel arches, and a bull bar with a winch. Oh, and it’s also the Brabus version of the ForTwo, which means it has a sportier exhaust than the regular car. If you’re looking for the smallest off-roader that you can find, here you go. It’s probably the perfect car for you.

But really, the best thing about this car is how completely unnecessary it is. No one actually needs a rear-wheel drive off-roader that’s less than nine feet long. Doing this to a Smart car is just wrong but in the best way possible. It’s ridiculous. It’s silly. Who wouldn’t want to drive it if they were given the chance? I’d take the next week off and fly across the country immediately if a friend told me they bought this car and offered me the chance to get behind the wheel.

It’s just fun. Certainly not fun in the way a Porsche 911 is fun. The entire concept is absurd, which automatically makes it fantastic. We love to see it, and we hope whoever wins the auction has a total blast owning such a weird, unnecessary off-roader. They deserve it.
