New software to discover local content

We here in MyBB have been mapping out the local-only internet for a very long time, we have even collaborated and set up a website (locallist.co.za). I am not too sure how an API and a Firefox toolbar really improves on the service. I would actually be keen to know how useful the API would be to other content generators.

I'm not sure comparison is in order in this instance, by virtue of the age old apples vs. oranges adage. By my understanding Locallist position themselves as a "local-only social bookmarking" service, where as Locality does not provide user accounts/interation at this stage. I believe choice in the sector, though, is ultimately beneficial to the consumer at the end of the day. Is it not something we strive for on a daily basis, with regards to choice, and competition, in telecommunications and broadband access in the country?

Perhaps you should rather compare both sites to an institution such as Google, which is far more capable than either, yet fails to provide filtering of locally hosted content. As such, I believe building upon the shoulders of giants is the best approach, in providing overlays for sites such as Google and (the locally accessible) Live Search.

For sure, and I do believe that competition is important, much like my stand with Amatomu and Afrigator. At this point, after looking at both locallist and locality, I feel that local list is far more valuable.

Just my opinion at the end of the day.

Locality, you could give us a bit more info on the plug-in.
How is ratings managed? And how can I view say the top 10 websites?

Is there no way that we as users can create our own rating of sites? this will make it far more interesting.
 
The Locality website has been around for a while, and I personally feel it's by far the better local indexing website. Mainly due to design and ease of use.

Hi MyWorld,

Ratings are more traffic rankings, and operate off of the popularity of a website based off of its traffic via click-throughs from the directory, and views from the toolbar.

You can view a list of the top sites at: http://locality.co.za/topsites

Unfortunately an efficient ratings system would require user accounts, which are not a priority currently. Though, as the feature set increases options such as these will be introduced.

I like the idea, since being capped is quite limiting and we need to make the best of the free gigs offered. However, I expected the search function to bring out some local companies like SAA (missing) or 1Time (also missing).
 
How are the pages ranked?

I dont seem to be able to believe that mybb is more read than all other sites in SA. We have more IT techies in SA than all other professions combined?
