New Speakers

Hey,

Ok, went to hear the Monitor Audio BX2's today and must say I'm pretty impressed. But now I've been givin the following 3 alternative options, wanted to know what u guys think (compared to the bx2's):
1) Wharfedale Diamond 10 Home Cinema Package
2) Polk Audio TSI-300 fronts with matching surrounds (no sub)
3) Mission MX3 sound pack

Also, am I making a bad move by going for a bookshelf set instaead of floorstanding?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm no fan of 1. but you should pick what you prefer listening to, what we like is pretty much irrelevant.

I would definitely suggest traditional speakers (like bookshelf or floorstanders) far above "lifestyle" Sub/Sat speakers.

I was all set on a lifestyle system (sub + satellites) - I listened to the KEF Eggs, B&W MT30, Monitor Audio Radius... and they are great! I was ready to buy the Monitor Audio Radius... I spent hours demoing the different systems... then the salesman suggested listening to some a full size speakers :-) WOW! What a difference! The sound was so much fuller!

For movies, a lifestyle / sub-sat system is fine... but for music, normal speakers are much better....

I ended up going for some Monitor Audio Silver speakers (RS6)... I bought the rest of the 5.1 system later (rears + centre)!

I am not a fan of Mission speakers...they tend to sound "tinny".

Listen in a sound room...your ears won't lie.

Greg - what full size speaker did you listen to after the life style which made the big difference?

If you take a price point (ie R10,000 for 5 plus sub) and compare a full set of lifestyle and floorstanders, there should be no difference.

I've already shown there's no such thing as a frequency hole in the lifestyle speakers and a decent set (such as what you're heard) sound fantastic

It does beg the question that if the lifestyle systems sound the same as the bookshelf/floorstander speakers then why still manufacture them at all....?

Space constraints?

They (all) don't make them as a cheaper alternative!

There are people with no space willing to spend a little more to get close to floorstander sound. There shouldn't be a WOW difference - unless the price was largly different?

I mean he was listening to R10,000 for 5 speakers a sub. If - for example - the full range that made him go WOW were 5 Monitor Audio Silver speakers and sub for R20,000 it'd be slightly unfair?

Take a floorstanding R10,000 set to compare.

I'm willing to bet I'll get a sub/sat combo in a few months that'll put the STR combo to shame

You found a challenge?

Ya, thought not... Dolby vs Dolby as per usual. :D

Heed your own advice!

:D

Sorry I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I mean if there was no difference between the lifestyle speakers (which are more compact etc) and the larger Floorstander type speakers then why would they still make the large floorstanders/bookshelf speakers...? This was of course a question in response to this comment of yours:

Maybe because they look the part?

It's a bit of Dolby logic (LOL, excuse the pun - Dolby Pro Logic :D)... Like saying "Plasma must suck, so panel manufacturers dropped it"... Similar in a way. "LCDs are so good that they dropped plasma".

I read more than I listen. I agree with the monitor audio or B&W 685 but I also suggest you go to Dion wired cos they got polk audio's on promotion. Best advice that anyone can give you is to listen.

Ya they look awesome :D Although I like the look of a chunkier system :) It all depends on your setup at home.

Not that I'm familiar with them, but why not audition some of these CAV speakers
They look the part and prices are pretty low. Plus a seven year warranty can't be bad.

Maybe someone can shed some light on the brand...not too many reviews available.

Ah - apologies.

There is a slight difference - just not a night/day at the same price point.

A R10,000.00 5.1 floorstanders and R10,000.00 5.1 set of lifestyle would both have pros and cons.

No prob :D The MT' 25s are beautiful set no matter how you look at it :) I see the speakers are exactly the same as the MT 30's, the only difference being the PV1 sub.

Ultimately you need to take the material you intend to listen to and spend some time listening to the speakers you're considering. I'd also suggest going back at least a couple of times to listen again before deciding. You're going to be listening to these things, probably for years, so your preference is important.

When I was buying I listened to a lot of different makes and models. In the end Monitor Audio came out on top, closely followed by Sonor Audio and then the Pod speakers. Some of the other supposedly good brands were awful, typically bass oriented. Obviously that suits some people otherwise they wouldn't sell. I find my Monitor Audio speakers deliver good, solid bass I can feel, but without making the sound boomy or muddy.

I think that also very often depends on how people set up their speakers. They feel that if it isn't "booming" then it isn't working properly which of course isn't the case.

Exactly.

A few years ago my stereo sound was in the region of R50,000.00 - and I went to an audio show at Indaba. I walked in one of the rooms and took a listen to a R100,000.00 system comprising Boston Acoustics and Rotel. Many people would cum in their pants for those brands. The sales person glanced at me, assumed I knew nothing and told me to sit down and be wow'd.

I thought mine sound better - but thought I'd sound bias .... until my ex that knew nothing of sound, turned to me and said the same thing.

Made me all warm and fuzzy inside ;)
