New (stupid) traffic flow plan for Jhb

Problem is that they are not averaging it out, they are just moving it to a new location
 
Of course they're averaging it. Traffic is caused by large conglomerations of cars that, to avoid collisions, cause a chain reaction of braking and accelerating. Which is what traffic is. Ramp meters seek to downsize the volumes of the cars engaged in this brake/accelerate action, and at the very least may even cause drivers to choose alternative routes, freeing up more of the highway. Lekker!

All good and well. Problem is the way that people drive. The don't brake/accelerate to avoid collisions, but rather to get in that 1.5m spot first. SA drivers (well most of them in any case) are f@cking retards, and drive way too aggressively. Everyone believes the road belongs to them.

There are no alternative routes to choose, as they are all already just as backed up like the highways.

Say what you want, it is a mess. During a school holiday week, shifting the problem back to even before the onramp ... God help us when the holiday week is over
 
If they can stop the initial buildup of traffic from occurring then they will work.

But, it's a catch 22 situation, it has to be implemented on just about the entire highway before it can be proven to work, and, the "trial" probably caters only for some sections.

All I'm saying is, at least they're not giving us packets of african foodstuffs and witchdoctor's numbers to attempt to solve the traffic problem. Instead of doing ****all they're using our tax money for something tangible, that may or may not work. When presented with a problem do you wring your hands and cry and fall to the floor? Try stay positive man. At least it's been tried in many other parts of the world and at least it's something for now. Because people ain't gonna stop buying cars.

I said from the beginning it is not going to work, and I saw it falling apart on a relatively quiet morning this morning. It is not about being negative/positive ... It's about knowing :D

The difference with other parts of the world (well, where I saw it working really well in the States in any case) is that the onramps where this was implemented were long and flat. By the time you need to merge, you are already on speed, so it works nicely to only merge one/two vehicles at a time.

Now take Samrand for instance. The highway is on a steep incline, so already people are slowing down for slower (possible illegal) taxis and trucks ... Now enter a steep incline onramp, with two major kinks in it (not to mention the f@cknuts driving through the Ultra City to gain 10 car lengths) ... You can't get to merge properly, no matter what you try.

Which brings us back to my original issue. I did not merge any better this morning with the new lights in place. The only difference was I was queueing on Samrand already as opposed to the onramp previously.

The N1's biggest problem is the way it is built: It should have cut through the "koppies" instead of going over them, as the uphills are just too much for some vehicles.

But other parts of the world have decent public transport. What do we have? Currently fsckall and when the Cowtrain comes we'll still have fsckall. Why? Because there won't be any bl00dy public transport to take us from the stations to our place of work/homes. It's a total balls up, they could have bought so many buses and fixed up so much of our current rail system (anyone remember Metrorail?) but NO some idiot came up with the idea of Cowtrain and that's all we're going to get; w@nkers!!!
 
the roads are over populated and not just taxis - bad and pathetic drivers drive all sorts of cars.

in that group a few have stepped up the be a law onto themselves which the police couldn't care less to do actual policing...
 
Why you guys complaining when it hasnt even started?
They have done the research and have to try it out, if it works then its good, by being negative how else will "we" solve the traffic problems?

i can picture (pretoria) attebury and (midrand) allendale/newroad [not to mention william nicol further on] onramps with these installed... going to be a ball around them

Results presented to Mn/DOT by Cambridge Systematics showed that without ramp meters there was:

* A 9 percent reduction in freeway volume.
* A 22 percent increase in freeway travel times.
* A 7 percent reduction in freeway speeds, which contributed to the negative effect on freeway travel times. The reliability of freeway travel time was found to decline by 91 percent without ramp meters.
* A 26 percent increase in crashes, which was averaged for seasonal variations. These crashes broke down to a 14.6 percent increase in rear-end crashes, a 200 percent increase in side-swipe crashes, a 60 percent increase in "run off the road" crashes, and an 8.6 percent increase in other types of crashes.

What car do you drive, so I can stay clear of you on the highway? :p They've had notices on those big amber overhead displays about it going live today for the last week or so.
 
I would rather *try* my best to stay positive and believe that the incompetency that runs this show might actually pull something off
