New (stupid) traffic flow plan for Jhb

Comming from the table view/ parklands area in cape tonw.. one of the biggest traffic rpoblems I for see is ppl running red lights and allowing them self to get caught in the middle of a crossing...

I would love to see traffic cameras on every robot for red lights and ppl who cross the intersection when there is not enoguht spce to make over the othere side....

then the knobs who change lanes in the middle of an intersection.. you should frikken die... </end rant>

That's definitely one of my pet hates as well ... That's where the Landy comes in handy ... if the robot is green for me, I just drive ... either you make space or you should start calling the tow truck :D

I only look for the green X so I can use the extra lane... but very wierd coz im normally very observant, must be the fast.

Not really. Ive seen much worst than me.
 
Here's the problem with ramp metering: it clogs up every arterial accessing the highway. So where you save 10 minutes on a free flowing highway you waste probably double that accessing the highway.

As for the case studies done abroad - South Africa's arterial network of roads getting onto highways is in most cases very regulated by existing traffic lights as it is, so adding a finite metering limit will result in severe congestion at all these intersections. The successful implementation of ramp metering in other countries will likely be attributable to a greater accessible highway, more lanes in the onramps to the highways and less congestion in arterials accessing the higway to begin with. Also, in other countries there are more access routes and greater numbers of alternative routes so metering will result in less highway bound traffic. Gauteng's road system is horribly designed, and single on- and offramps are the cause for the congestion, not just the number of cars hitting the highway. But try getting that into Jeff's thick skull. The only measure these turds have for success is highway congestion.

Typical - just like raising interest rates will curb our inflation.

So if today is the first of this ramp metering, we can see how its affecting congestion on the offramps.
 
@JK8: no, probably not. Not all the onramps are being metered. This morning on Samrand I was delayed by ~ 15 minutes. The taxis, of course, were not delayed as they just ignore the lights and go down the yellow lane anyway.

Thats the offramp near Blue Valley? I dont go down that far, but will check the other offramps. As for the taxis, dont worry about them, they going to do what they always do.

But this metering thing could work, mainly during the peak morning traffic, but they just need to synchronize correctly. I rather have the powers trying to control the traffic than to just leave it to get worst.
 
Yes. I travel from Blue valley, It didn't work this morning and I don't see it working ever.

U stay there? Wow beautiful place! I got a stand there. cant afford to build just yet will sell as soon as it hits a mil!

Why dont you use Olifants? Or is it still as bad as it was before?
 
This is not a South African idea. They have used it for years in California. Don't have any opinion on its effectiveness, but I guess it works there or it would have been done away with (hopefully). Big difference is that in the US, drivers obey red lights (well, more or less) but more than here in SA!
 
JK8, myself staying at ValleyView Estate, opposite Blue Vally, olifants does get clogged, best bet is to fly up lever road rather, and then try jump on at allendale, but it all depends on the time......
