Hi All,

Looking for a new tablet, iPads are awesome imo but so expensive compared to the competition.

what are thoughts on these and how do they compare to an iPad?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite 7.0 (wi-fi, 8gb, white)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 (wifi, 8gb, white)

Thx,
D3x!

I sit in a similar position - I want a new tablet but not an iOS device (iPad 2 still working fine but ...meh)

So, my main requirements were that I want something smaller. Initially I looked at the new Tab 4 7" and besides them being out of stock the reviews suggest that although they are an improvement on the Tab 3's they are by no means great. Scores of like 6/10

So after a lot of reading and review watching I narrowed it down to these three:

Nexus 7 (2013) 32GB WIFI - it is great and all but the has no SD Card slot

LG Gpad 8.3 16GB WIFI - it supports SD Cards, the Optimus UI is great apparently and the hardware is better than the Nexus 7. Just not sure about the "odd" screen size

Asus MeMo 7" IPS 16GB WiFi - launched beginning of last month, it is selling for much cheaper at +- R2200 (Orange) with decent battery life. Also supports SD Cards and has new Intel chipset. Currently I am leaning towards this one

They compare pretty poorly. The Tab 3's and 4's aren't really competing with iPads, they're competing with the cheapo no-name brand Chinese stuff in terms of performance. The Tab 3's and 4's have terrible displays and very slow processors. In the 7" size the only one worth anything is really the Nexus 7.

Edit: Also, 8GB?? Not bad for 1997, but today Touchwiz will eat up most of that. Seriously not worth it. I don't know what those cost but the Nexus 7 (2013 model) is definitely worth the money.

Have to wholeheartedly agree with this. Get a Nexus 7 (2013) - it will be about the same price or even cheaper (my guess) and much better.

I just bought the Note 8". Very similar in size to the iPad mini (7.9"). Works excellent and comes with built in stylus. R2999 for 16Gb wifi only from game with mifi router and 500mb free till June next year.

hmm the nexus is almost the price of the iPad mini then.

although I suppose that has 3g also.

Apart from the Nexus7 2013 which for me was just too small, there's the Xiaomi MiPad - if you can somehow get it shipped. I'm not excited about other tablets. Samsung's new 8.4 Tab looks amazing but it's the same price as an iPad.

Firstshop have the older 32G 3G Nexus 7 with a set of Philips headphones and 500Mb/m for a year for R1999, incl delivery, FYI.

Don't skimp on price when you buy something that you will be using as often as a tablet. I wish I had more than 16Gb of space on my iPad.

Nothing wrong with it. If that's all you have in your budget, you won't find anything better. Especially if it's the 3G model.

This. If it is the 3G model and 3G is a requirement it is probably the best out there.

ok perhaps I should put requirements out there better:

For a wumminz
Wants 7"ish :/ (just behave)
3G not really a requirement but welcomed

To be used for:
browsing 9gag / pinterist, web etc.
Calender / mail (synced to their exchange server)
maybe some ibooks although she prefers actual books
light gaming like pvz, that sort of thing

That's what she said.

But yeah the 2012 N7 should be perfect. The Kalahari link seems to be the 3G version. The newer one is better in every way but then it costs more.

A bit OT but can you make traditional voice calls these Note 8's ...basically use it like a cell phone but do tablet stuff on it too :o
