New kid on the block, Vulcan Labs, a web and mobile development company based in Somerset West, has officially opened its doors in the hopes to aid web and mobile development in the area. Specialising in the programming platform Ruby on Rails, Vulcan Labs wants to position itself as a tech hub for web or mobile developers who want a space to develop their skills, and get access to industry expertise.
Founder Angus Miller sees Vulcan Labs’ role to be a tech collective or incubator for the Somerset West region: “We are very excited to be a part of the booming tech scene in the Western Cape and look forward to adding value through workshops, hosting of tech innovation meetings, events and knowledge sharing.” Miller explains that the company has a wealth of experience and has worked across diverse portfolios. “Our competitive advantage is our phased approach to creating applications. We work with entrepreneurs and businesses to create apps that are functional at each phase, that allow for the app and its features to test the market at every phase, so at the end of development cycle the application is fully functional and, more importantly, fully relevant.”
Testing the concept prior to investing time and money into a full-featured and large scale application is an important element for Miller, who says one needs to keep in mind that an application is often an experimental idea with features not tested in a market environment, and to create an application that has a myriad of features not only takes time, but can be very expensive too.
Vulcan Labs has a wealth of web, database and business intelligence experience, with a specific focus on building solutions using the Ruby on Rails® platform, which they believe give them a competitive advantage in delivering complex solutions with a short time to market.
The official launch of Vulcan Labs will be on Friday 23 August 2013 and includes a high level introduction to Ruby on Rails® development, a demonstration of a sample application and a “getting started” guide to Ruby on Rails® development and as Miller quips, “basically everything we wished we knew when we started Ruby on Rails”.
He believes that Ruby on Rails is for the entrepreneur with an idea that will change the world, or the CEO with a concept to improve their organisation.
