I see telkom has dropped their prices for the marconi modems to R1449 ethernet and R1149 USB.

I know the marconi's are not the best modems around, but its still about R1000 cheaper than the Alcatals were a couple of months ago.

Hi ChezAnwyne

It is good to see that there is some reaction from Telkom. In the latest media report I focused a great deal on the parts of ADSL pricing which are independent of international bandwidth, and modems were a good example. It is regrettable that these price reductions only happens after we complain and the media starts to investigates the issue. Having said this, it is good to see price reductions. Let’s hope it carries through to line rentals and installations.

To anyone interested, the Netgear 834 I picked up for R1625.00 as of Dec 03. Ethernet 4 port router. R200.00 more for something far superior--- and not a penny goes into Telkom's pocket. I had it on order for 90 GBP from the UK (retail) so it's still an inflate price, but then it had to be done!

Hi Fusion1.

Have you tried it out and what did you do regarding the AC Power Adapter? I assume these will work in SA?

If so...any good place on the web where I could order one of these Netgear Routers from?

I dont know if anyone else has had this problem, but my Marconi USB ADSL modem has two lights on it. The one that says "Power" blinks every now and again and "Data" stays permanently on !!! I am not even going to try to comprehend what Marconi and Telkom are trying to do to us. Just imagine how many queries their support department get every day from confused noobs...

Stasoft, sorry for late reply. I didn't manage to find the Netgear on the internet, I phoned Duxbury and they passed on resellers to me, so phoned around and got the best price. Picked it up personally.

As far as power adaptor, the Netgear actually includes a R50.00 british to za adaptor in the box. Well you'd expect this for the price. basically, it's the UK box with this chucked in.

I actually run UK surge protectors and kept all plugs UK as they have fuses built in (and surge units aren't cheap here) so didn't even need the adaptor! bliss.

Hello Xinetd.

It seems that you might have a (slight?) problem with your USB connection from your PC. Strange, though, that your Data LED would stay on.... The USB modems/devices usually gets their power from the PC/Laptop's USB ports...

So, if the PowerLED flickers, sometimes, either the LED is dual-purpose, or the actual power from the USB port on your PC is fluctuating....

Hope this sheds some light on your questions.

Cheers.
Jacques

why don't you guys just get a planet wireless router, Those stuff are kewl. Comes with 4 network connections and supports all wifi connections to it! Its not 2 pricey, Contact The Digital Cafe (cape town) 021 55 66 179.

..- dot dot dash ;)

Hi Xinetd,

Don't worry about it, either the wiring or the silk screening, is wrong on this modem, the LED's are effectively reversed. Read DATA as POWWER and visa versa.

As an aside, this modem is available on the Internet for $19, with the correct labels, Telkom must have their own exchange rate.

Cheers
Chris
