New The PC Build Thread

Anyone one know of a guide or steps to take to install the minimum of windows and not all their junk and bloatware.

Junk and bloat ware is just kak Linux users complain about. Stock windows is fine.

You can remove anything you like after install, but finding a specific build without things is just asking for kak - instability etc.

Also, if he’s learning, let him learn the correct way instead of a convoluted workaround solution which may or may not work correctly first time, requires tuning etc.

All I can say is don't buy a cheap case. Boy was already over budget and then went and bought cheap case. Now the case looks pretty nice and have 4 fans, all for R599. But man every thing that was a problem while building was because of the case.
Struggled to get the IO shield in
Then we had an big and long struggle to get the GPU in. Not because of size but there where it shift in and get screwed down.
Then we could not even get the hdmi cable in properly and had to bend a piece of metal away.

.....

Get the best/nice case and you can re-use it over a lifetime.

The Phanteks XT Pro Ultra. It is top rated for airflow and ease of cabling and component placements. You can pick up a used one for ~R800 on Carbonite or new for R1499 from Wootware. 5 year Warranty on this case as well so it's a lifer.

This is my favourite case. I added 4 extra fans to bring it to a total of 10 fans (intake + exhaust fans mix) Total was R3300 with extra fans.

Depends on ya budget. Both are excellent cases.

Ok, just got my PC back after the new kit was installed. So far, works like a charm and runs a shitton faster...

Will report back after some gaming.
Reporting back.
  • Runs NFS Unbound like a charm on 900fps Low 60fps. (I couldn't do this with the previous setup).
  • Tried FC 25, but I think it is a problem with the game, because the moment I have to kick off a match on load-in, it exits. (Maybe I should try FC 24, since it ran perfectly well on 720p 60fps Low with the previous setup)
  • Also tried CS2 on 1080p Low 60fps, works like a charm. (Couldn't even play on 720p 30fps without it looking like the game wants to crawl to a halt every 5 seconds).
Currently redownloading MW2019 to give it a whirl on better settings and to better test the new system.

@UrBaN963 So what happens now?

LOL hopefully not. I don't know much and the boy less. But he have to learn to do it himself. So I am just checking in here and there with my little knowledge to see if he does not blow it up. Most things seem straightforward, Will just read a bit on how to install windows from usb for the first start.
Kinda sux that kids learn the easy way of pc building nowadays. Just plug in and it all works

..the good old days of building a Xt/286/386 etc and no internet, thats a proper learning curve

If I had to rate every case that I had worked in recently it would be in the following order:

1) Lian Li Lancool 216 (the best airflow case ever)
2. Deepcool CH560 Digital (surprisingly good, but also the most expensive on my list)
3) Montech 903 MAX (Not pretty, but functional)
4) Lian Li Lancool 205M (just better than the Air 100)
4) Montech AIR 100 ARGB (fantasic little case)
5) Montech AIR 1000 Premium (overrated budget case, ill-engineered)

Temps wise, there is almost no difference between the 216 and 560. The 903 is close.

Edit: Actually, there is another case, the 205M. Updated my list.

Get another stick of memory, plus what gpu are you running?

I don't know, I guess now you cry quietly while you try figure out why you're getting such low FPS?

I'm glad it seems to be working fine, but I would be trying to find my missing frames instead of posting on MyBB if I were you.

EDIT: IF the kit shipped with 1x16GB instead of 2x8GB then that will be a place you can improve performance. A GPU with more VRAM would really help too, something with 8GB would make a decent difference and they can be found quite cheaply on Carbonite these days.

Like I said, I'm happy with 45 or 60 (or even 30, if the situation calls for it). I don't need 120+ fps.

I apologise for touching your studio once again, your lordship...

Ah okay, if you're happy with that FPS then it's all good, enjoy your PC man :)

So it took a bit long to build for us noobs. But pc worked first time when we started it and loaded windows.
So before lightning hit his pc the boy had this that I bought mostly secondhand.
Cheap A320m motherboard
Ryzen 3600
700w psu
Rx 480 4gb GPU

Insurance gave 11k for the pc :D But boy went over budget and this is his 12.5k Build. I think we got some good deals? Everything is brand new except for GPU.

Cheap case and WD 1tb NVMe R1500 (new)

MSI B450 Pro max II AM4 motherboard + Ryzen 5 5600x + 2 x 8gb RGB 3600mhz Ram R4500 (new)

XFX RX 6700XT Speedster GPU R5000 (secondhand)

Corsair RM750e 750watt Gold fully modular psu R1500 (new)

He can now Fortnite at a gazillion fps. Will get a better cooler later and maybe new fans for the case, The fans rgb is very bright and the rgb and fans speed can't be changed.

How taxing is it on AMD hardware? Most of AMD's newer GPUs are capable of Ray Tracing at 1080p, but pushing the quality thereof makes it hard for the hardware to keep up at 1440p. I am curious to see the Indiana Jones benchmarks.
It looks like the minimum specs were greatly exaggerated, I saw a 3060Ti do what they recommended for a 3080Ti.

So we just bought a cheap windows 10 Pro key and installed it. But obvious can upgrade to Windows 11. So what do people reckon these days. Stay on 10 or go to 11?
