New The PC Build Thread

Use the old gfx card and get a non-G variant of the cpu, 7000/9000 series. The G units have low L3 cache which you will notice (stuttering) in games once you get a new gfx card down the line.
Thanks makes sense. Appreciate the input.

Im thinking of spending a few zars on my home pc. I mostly use it for slicing stl files to print on my 3d printer and I spend a few hours a week playing WoW.

I have an Intel i5 4690 and a GTX 1060 with an MSI h97 mother board (thats really on its last legs.).

The idea is to get an AMD Ryzen 8600G and maybe later get a new GPU. My hard drives, case PSU should still be fine.

Thoughts?

Yeah a tad more, but you're getting a better CPU and better RAM, also moving over to B850 vs B650, not a lot different there apparently, but it is newer and cheaper

Main price increase is taking the RAM to 32GB 6000mhz instead of 1 single stick of 16GB.

Thanks. Im busy comparing CPUs now. Seems like the X CPUs does not some with a cooler. but thats not the end of the world.

:D I might just go have a look at what evetech has to offer if I feel a bit reckless later

There is also not big risk in buying secondhand CPU and RAM. Can get better deals on Carbonite.

Back of case looks like crap again :-), new ARGB fans ordered and hopefully come soon, as the old fans are analogue RGB so don't talk to mobo at all. Yeah it isn't easy cleaning the back of the case :-)

Personally I decided I am done with RGB. Too distracting next to TV.

All fans replaced with Scythe Wonder Snails. 1mm thicker than the 25mm norm for 120's due to thicker rubber and I'm not hearing them at all.

Far less cables so cleaner and easier build too.

Mine is on the floor on a stand so it lights up the study for me :-)

Ladies and Gents,

My PC has an MSI PRO B660M-E DDR4 INTEL MOTHERBOARD and I would like to upgrade the storage. The RAM is 16GB (2x8gb).

I will be receiving a Samsung 990 Pro 1TB NVMe Solid State Drive with Heatsink tomorrow from amazon but I am starting to think that I made mistake. Will SSD work well on this B660M-E DDR4? I have been thinking that maybe I should return the ssd from amazon and get something like this:

https://www.takealot.com/western-di...50-nvme-internal-ssd-solid-state/PLID93738876

or

https://www.takealot.com/western-di...00-nvme-internal-solid-state-dri/PLID97515184

or

https://www.takealot.com/lexar-nm620-m-2-2280-internal-ssd1tb/PLID92284235

Am I correct to say that the Samsung SSD will not do much for my mobo? With the cash from the refund I can maybe upgrade the RAM or just get a 2T ssd instead.

I look forward to your advice.

Buyer's remorse? ..overpaid for a Samsung sticker on a low endurance MLC drive that you cant even use half the speed of in your board.

edit: and if its the tlc one, still samsung tax and low endurance. Also not sure if they fixed the 990 drives randomly dying yet.

..i miss the good old 970 evo plus days

The peak read write speed is technicalky irrelevant in most use cases so you won't be anywhere near that 99% of the time

It is a marketing gimmic that only a small % of user would be able to utilise and only in some scenarios

The pricier drives tend to have better iops which does translate to snappier PC

Not up to date on these drives so shooting from the hip now

these drives does not have dram cache you pay less and get less

The samsung does however have 1gb of cache , if i can believe the ai response

That does make a difference in day to day use in certain scenarios

The samsungs dying not up to date
Would have to google that

Update:

I have decided to go with the "Crucial E100 Internal SSD, 1TB PCIe Gen4 2280 NVMe M.2". The price was good and I think it will get the job done. I have also learned that the Samsung 990 Pro SSD has a lot of issues, so I will log a return right after they have delivered it today.

if its this one: Crucial e100 Then yikes. cancel that order, that drive is a glorified piece of plastic to level a table.

Edit: Would personally go for something like this minimum : Kingston KC3000 . Dram and at least 800tbw endurance.

I see that Wootware has increased prices about R100 on parts

New system up and running. Everything looks in order. Haven't played around much with the bios. Ram is running at 5600mhz, everything else is normal....just need to run one or two games to check stability, haven't loaded it much.

For RTX 40 owners. Smooth Motion is now supported. Some argue that Lossless Scaling's LSFG is better than Nvidia's native application. I won't know; I don't have an Nvidia GPU.
