New The PC Build Thread

Decent PSU, unless you have a platinum rated PSU, you still have a considerable extra draw from the wall socket regardless. For the most part, PSU's are less efficient at lower loads, pending the topology of the design. So you might not actually be doing your self any favours. There is a power draw efficiency curve, the curve starts at 50%-70% for peak efficiency. It may be showing you are drawing 100 watts less, but it isn't necessarily more efficiently drawing power either way for the alleged saving. 100 watts equals 0.1kw, 1kw per 10 hours of continuous load, a bit cynical ? A boiling kettle uses just under a kilowatt when boiling a full kettle.

Unless you are on solar, which I can understand most would agree it is a bit silly.
Yeah I am on solar :) current total draw from the house. It was closer to 500w prior. And given I mostly play at night, every watt helps.

Still bus experimenting but this 6700XT is responding well to an undervolt. Down to around 175w @ 95% GPU usage.

Also capped the 5600x at 50 watts and performance is still pretty decent although boost clocks are lower as is to be expected
50w is pretty extreme...I see your target is 60fps so that works but if you get into high frame rate gaming like CS2, Fortnite, BF6 etc. you'll want to up that to around 80w which will give you enough headroom for the +200mhz boost that PBO offers for the main thread / core.

That's pretty much how I've got my PC set up...high enough PPT for the primary core to boost to 4.85Ghz but still limited when I do a Handbrake encode.

Fair enough. Just be aware your load is under 50% of what the PSU can provide, your efficiency draw from the socket is a lot worse

Yup, basically going to run this until I switch games. It's just an experiment mostly, as I last dabbled with PC stuff back in 2018 when I sold my Ryzen 5 1600 PC. So I've been out of the loop for a few years, slowly catching up again in all the new stuff that I missed.

It's pretty cool how simple it is to run a PC how you want nowadays - setting up power limits and fan curves is a doddle.

I see you've already undervolted your GPU which I don't want to say is critical because it's a fiddle but it's so much better than running stock. 90% of the performance for ~70% power (and the resulting heat to dissipate) is cool AF... pun intended.

Getting a PC to perform at or close to it's peak while keeping the fans to reasonable decibels is its own little mini-game.

Been shopping around looking for a secondhand GPU for back up PC build. But fck me, they are taking the piss with the pricing on old GPUs asking 1k for a mid range GPU released over 10 years ago. It is retarded.

Went on temu spotted a new RX580 8gig for 2k. Seriously considering that, put out a couple of feelers to see if I can't get better pricing, if nothing I will get pull the trigger.

I see Progenix is now stocking Thermalright, and the pricing looks good. For other brands, it is going to be hard to beat that value.

/busy making a wishlist to stock my shelves with air coolers.

Worse is even at those prices many of them don't even want to sell. I tried end of last year to buy second hand and just got runaround after runaround and excuse after excuse money in hand. Ended up just buying a cheapie new.

I don't need anything fancy. GTX 1050 will do, but asking some retarded pricing for those even the 1060's.

I was looking for one to do light gaming and one to stick in a media box but had no luck.
If you are looking for one for a media box I ended up with an Arc A380 and its been solid.

Min requirements for me is a 970GTX, as that is what the development software requires. I am basically setting up a Backup PC, for min downtime in the event of failure, often encounter deadlines, waiting for spares to arrive is a problem.

The back up PC is nearly sorted just the GPU now, the new PSU is arriving this week. I am trying to avoid AMD GPU's as the software is really iffy with AMD and their drivers, so intel is a no go.

I have a friend in Europe that is sending me a RTX2060, but he is in the middle of a project so that is still a few weeks out. :(

I learned my lesson, and a fully functional back up is needed.

My plan is to get a secondhand 14th gen i7 middle or end of next and then, retire the old back up, and build a more up to dateish back up, and then use the old stuff for a media and retro and old PC gaming, will likely dual boot 7 and XP for that. Otherwise, I am just going to spend 3-4k get a basic ryzen 5 bundle.

Secondhand 14th gen i7 ..for a backup pc.

Better be sure its a new rma unit :P otherwise you'll prob be playing the silicon lottery on that cpu

For that price it's probably the 2048 rx580 which isn't the full blown one. So more like a RX575

GPU paid for done and dusted. Not going to fck around the bush. Probably the best deal I will find, That isn't total garbage, supports windows 10 and 11. Only annoyance is this RX 470 has only DVI output, but isn't really much of a headache, as far as I am aware it doesn't need to be an active adapter. Haven't used DVI in 10 plus years. I do have a DVI to HDMI convertor and a DVI to VGA. Worse comes to worse can always get a ugreen cable from amazon for R150 bucks

Now for the next Item on the list a 24 inch monitor, as I don't have a back up monitor. But that isn't really a headache and will get that new.

Yeah, when you see Youtubers buying R9 Fury's for the equivalent of R600, then our used market starts to feel like a rip-off.

Yeah didn't do too bad, all things considered, RX470 is the above the min requirements for development software, and has drivers for win 10 and win 11.

I am still thinking about what I am going to do OS wise with the backup PC, I am actually temped to go back to windows 7. But it will be an offline PC then, it is running 10, which means I can still use it online for a good while still...... It is a i7 4770k with 16gig ram, bit worried it might run like a dog on win 11.
