New The PC Build Thread

That sucks. But I guess, AMD no longer supports them from a driver perspective anyway, so something more modern would be the way to go.

I'd look at a 9060 XT if your budget can stretch that far. If not, have you considered Team Blue's B570/B580? They come in 10GB/12GB variants as well. As much as nVidia sits at the top of the stack in terms of performance, they aren't a company that I like supporting anymore.

Contemplating an RX 9060 XT 16GB as planned. I wasn't planning on changing things up this early, but it came to shove, so I have no choice. I was considering a B580 (the Asrock is well priced), but I would rather pay a little premium to get a longer service time; besides, I can do FP8 LLMs with RDNA 4.

My budget is tight. I am looking at restarting the business, so my own money is propping it up. I don't have cents to spare on PC components.

The Vega was supposed to be retired and moved into my server chassis. That is not happening anymore. The GPU may be old, but it can still do some ROCm tricks. It is a pity. I asked someone I know to see whether he can rework the GPU with the proper tooling, and yeah, he wasn't generous. I will rather do it when I get a new rework station and a donor Vega GPU.

I don't think you can go wrong with the 9060 XT.

I just hope AMD doesn't drop support as soon as they did for RDNA1 cards. I recall the fiasco a few weeks ago.

nVidia is a lot better in this regard. And I believe Arc cards have high CPU overhead on their drivers, but I think with each revision this is becoming less of an issue.

Snipped a screenshot from a vid I took but I received my two TridentZ modules to go with my existing TridentZ Neo's for a total of 4x8GB DDR4-3600.

Unfortunately the older non-Neo modules don't support as many RGB modes, so I couldn't set it to a static dim cool white as what was my intention, so I rather matched the GPU and CPU cooler to the warmer white of the modules and then I am just playing around with the fans at the moment.

Currently have it running with a lilac purple/blue-ish colour.

Really enjoying these ThermalRight fans though. They are pretty nice for R149.00 each

Very cool. Those fans are dope

I do have a better system, but it is my workstation. The old system is my gaming system, so whatever will be replacing the RX Vega 64 will be a massive upgrade. I don't play games that are too extensive. I had a look at the RTX 5060 GPUs, and having CUDA is a premium that is too high. Currently, I am leaning toward a new RX 9060 XT 16GB, as it will help with local LLM.

The Arc B580 is a good buy considering that it is R6000-odd. Not having FP8 is a deal-breaker. For me, it is not about FSR. Only the capabilities.

I see Wootware has the Gigabyte and Sapphire RX 9060 XTs at a good price. The XFX is a little bit more, but IIRC, runs real cool. The Sapphire Nitro RX 9060 XT isn't worth the premium. Hmmm, contemplating getting the XFX.

Neatened up the rat's nest that was behind the back panel. The daisy chain connectors for the fans make things very hard to manage.

At least it looks less Homer-ish now :)

Why no one sees the back
I know right? It's like those people who keep the front verge of their garden looking neat and tidy, but the inside and especially the back yard looks like a Vietnam jungle, or a place you expect the Predator to come leaping out of.

Wait you've seen my yard? My one dog went out 5 years ago and never came back. Been to scared to venture out

I had a long day yesterday. Came home, switched the PC on, and the RX Vega 64 lost display output. Eh... now there is a known issue with these cards when they age, get stressed, or both. Probing late at night, it is the same issue. I have no idea what MOSFETs are used by this thing. Can't get the same type SMDs, nor any donors at an acceptable price. People are being very unreasonable with old and even dead GPUs. Now, at this point, I am unable to tell whether any transistors went along with it.

Ugh. I guess I need to put her to rest. Also, my rework station is kaput. This is why I don't like lending tools to others. I am going to miss this GPU until I can get it running again. Once caps go, they go, so I don't even think it's worth it. Didn't look good under the scope. From all my old GPUs, this is the only one that has rust. Though I bought it used when an old crypto mining operation closed.

With what will I need to replace this? hmmm.

Could have shipped you a 3070 to hold you over if this happened a month ago - it's in my nephew's case now playing Valorant of all things.

All good, and thank you. The gesture is welcomed. I was going to replace the GPU, but I always postpone until better times that never come around.

I am going to get the XFX RX 9060 XT. I am a bit undecided between the Gigabyte, Sapphire Pulse, and XFX. In time, I would need to overhaul that entire system since the GPU will send the CPU and RAM into a comatose. GPU prices are going up next year, so maybe this was a sign.

I am still going to see whether I can go raid some scrapped PC parts. Maybe I will dig up a dead Vega 56/64 to get parts.

That is pretty!

Is that glass on granite I see? Or is that one of those fake countertops?

Don't put tempered glass on tiles and granite.

Unless you aim to be reddit PCMR story #999999
Postform countertop. I meant to replace it with a white one years ago...just never got to it.

Ah, that's fine then.

I shattered my side panel in the kitchen. Had to buy a whole new chassis.
Eish! I am guessing the spare part would have cost more than the case itself?

Wootware didn't have spare parts and I weren't in the mood to import.

Took the side panel and gave the chassis to my sisters kid. He bought mesh and molded a new side panel.
