Hello chaps :),

So the time has come for me to seriously consider fixed line internet. I've been on wireless i.e. Sentech, iBurst and Neotel :(. My Neoconnect comes up for renewal soon and I'm prepared to cancel early. I want the 4 meg line which would convert to 10 meg :D.

My queries are as follows:

- Why must a ADSL line have an accompanying voice line? Adding a nominal voice line fee of R 170 totals about R 623.Telkoms' call centre advised that one has to take a voice line together with the ADSL line :(.
- I noticed the OpenWeb Uncapped package @ R 400. My average monthly dload is about 100gigs. I only use internet at night, would this package suffice?
- What modem should I consider?

Thank you in advance :)

Dang, what wireless were you using that allowed you to download 100gb/month (and still having money left to feed yourself).

Adsl uses a voice line to work thus telkom charges us for normal line to make extra cash

Openweb Uncapped is quite good i hear, but check the fair usage policy not sure what their limit is that you can download or shaping policies

You would need an Adsl Router with adsl2+ not a modem to use ADSL internet

First question: You need to pay line rental for a voice line no choice:(

Second question:I would recommend @lantic for uncapped their shaping is very low im almost maxing out my 4000mbps line usually between 3.8-3.9 mbps ,their package is only R539 and if you buy the Telkom line with the data you only pay R889 saving R63 and it's not a after hours account:)

Third question: I would recommend a Billion modem

Think of it this way. You need a voice line to get a copper cable to your house. For this you pay the voice line rental. Then for ADSL Telkom has to install some additional equipment called a DSLAM at the exchange. For that you pay the ADSL "line rental".
It will forever remain a mystery to me why they called it such rather than ADSL equipmet rental or similar.

reading his post its neotel

Yep, I'm one of the fortunate few

Ja this compulsory voice thing is ***

If you only use it at night maybe consider one of the after hours accounts, I know openweb and axxess have them.
