Hello all - doing some renovations at home and am in the market for a new TV. Was planning on spending about R14K. Partial to Samsung. I have a 59inch gap - decided that I'd want either a nice 50 or 55 inch to fill it.

This special is currently on - http://www.dionwired.co.za/samsung-50-ultra-hd-led-tv.html - any comments / recommendations?

The bits i understand is that series 7 is the latest from them and thus best. Are there any other specials out there that you can recommend?

Obviously, i'd be saving a bit of tom as well going this route:)

D@mmit! I read that way wrong hey!

Ag no man... sies probably going to go for a curved unit as well

I spent R13k on a 42" Philips back in 2007 and regretted it, given how quickly the then "advanced" features made it onto larger tellies for 1/3 of the price a year later. Granted, it works flawlessly 8 years on but I simply paid too much and so did others when the bought into the gimmic of 3D a couple of years on.

PP will be with you shortly. ;)

What the hell - the price is too good to resist - I have succumbed to temptation and pulled the trigger - order placed:)

Was also shopping for a new TV recently. Looked at 3D inside lots of perfect environment stores with demo videos: Stunning visuals that pop out of the screen. Went to a buds house after he got one, total waste of time and the 3D glasses gave his kids headaches. Ended up pulling the trigger on a Samsung UA50HU7000 - Ultra HD Smart TV. Yes there is virtually no 4K content around but the built in upscaling from HD to 4K is amazeballs! Blown away by the quality of the pics, even old SD stuff on TCM looks stunning on this thing. 3D is a fad, 4K is necessity!

Nonsense. Anyone who knows a thing or two disables all that Hz crap.

LCD cannot match plasma at motion handling.

I tend to agree with you a bit, the average LED LCD TV doesn't match Plasma for motion handling but the upper end of the LED range out there these days does pretty well. Add the cons of Plasma (likes it being the Betamax of the TV world) and I don't see why you are still flogging this dead horse...

.

Refresh rates and motion-enhancing modes higher than 60Hz can produce a surreal effect when watching movies and television shows. The additional frames and "smoother" animation looks different from what we're used to with TV and movies, making the footage appear strangely fast. For any sort of content where you watch people interact naturally, like comedies or dramas, this can be unsettling and you should consider turning off the motion enhancing mode and force the screen to display the picture at 60Hz. However, for sports and video games, those added frames can help reduce stuttering and blur, and the action will be easier to track.

Plasma is not comparable to Betamax. The horse will be flogged while it's alive, because it's better. And most importantly, a win for the consumer who has been duped by the LCD myth.

If you'd prefer to hear it from someone who's owned both the latest highest end Samsung plasma and LCDs, look no further - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ons-thread?p=14635234&viewfull=1#post14635234. Even a nice video a little further on.

What if he'd prefer to hear from DisplayMate which - according to most people - has more clout? They do say it's a non issue ...
