The new university being built in Kimberley next year will be called the Sol Plaatje University, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

A new university in Nelspruit would be known as the University of Mpumalanga, he said.

"Our young people are hungry for education," Zuma told reporters in Pretoria.

"We are establishing these institutions because we want every province in the country to provide an institution of higher learning."

He said the universities would initially take in fewer than 200 students each.

Zuma and Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande were giving an update on the progress made so far in establishing the two new universities.

During his state-of-the-nation address, Zuma announced that construction on the universities was expected to start this year.

He said that while the university's would start operating next year, they would move into their new premises only in 2015.

Does Mpumalanga mean something that I'm not aware of?

According to the all knowing Google

The name means east or literally "the place where the sun rises" in Swazi, Xhosa, Ndebele and Zulu.

Two universities were announced one in Mpumalanga and another in the Northern Cape. There is obviously a mistake in that sentence.

This journalist deserves a special award! Here's another gem from the article:

So, we cant provide textbooks for primary school children, and our basic maths literacy is the worst in Africa, but we are building 3 new universities?

Just 2 universities not 3.
BTW the text books for primary schools and basic maths literacy problems are of a separate department (Department of Basic Education).

The money comes from the same source.

What is the point in building these new universities, if our basic education is so poor that 99% of the people from disadvantaged backgrounds will not be able to pass university anyway?
