New Unmanned speed cameras

Has anyone else seen the new speeding cameras Metro are now using.
They place them on the leftmost side of the highways and leave them alone.
They are unmanned and seem to cover all lanes

How legal is this?
Surely the photos will have other cars in it particularly if you're in the fast lane
 
I received two "fines" from these. 1st thing I noticed, is that my cars registration number is not clearly visible. You can see it's a similar car, but the law states the reg nr must be clearlu visible.
 
Saw one on N2 near Plett last week. The traffic cops were sitting in their car about 500m away watching the camera since it was in a squatter camp area. The camera on tripod is only about 40cm high, near impossible to spot.

You'd be surprised what can be accomplished by blob tracking and automatic identification. Speed, direction etc... determining which vehicle was speeding from which lane is trivial to the right software on a high speed camera. If you can identify two vehicles driving towards you, you can be damn sure the camera can as well.

I'm sure on top of this all, they still have to process the footage at the office later anyhow, to audit and deal with discrepancies.
 
Seen one on the N1s after going under the new road bridge. Its on the left shoulder. Some days it's quite high up. About 150m after the on-ramp, some days its all the way down to the Alexander Ave bridge. Thought it could only pick up the two left lanes. Also, quite easy to "hide" behind a bus thats travelling in the middle lane to avoid it.

Request the full size photos, the ones they mail are crap quality compared to what the cameras take.

On the shoulder, only 40cm high? Sounds awfully easy to mistakenly drive over mistakenly... mistakenly.
 
You guys do know that these 'unmanned' camera's are good news? :p

If you have a lazer diffuser you can get into trouble as you are not allowed to use it. Most of the newer camera's give the officer an error code to indicate such and you will most probably be pulled off and your vehicle will be checked. But seeing as nobody is manning the camera........

Just thinking out load....

What would you accomplish by proving it was an unmanned camera?

They've been legal for a while, JMPD has just started using them now.

AFAIK the law states all cameras must be manned- I stand to be corrected though
 
Those cameras are worth a small fortune. And yes, they are legal afaik...
