I have just spotted the new Vodacom coverage map - what a HUGE improvement. It allows you to load seperate layers for GSM/GPRS coverage, EDGE coverage and 3G/HSDPA coverage or any combination of the layers.

The search facility is also a HUGE improvement and now allows you to drill down to street level to check coverage. The new map can be found at http://www.vodamap.net/3g/.

Well Done Vodacom !!!! :D

I tried the email, but it just bounced. Are you sure that is the right email address for the system admin?

Why is there no Edge coverage in Gauteng

Historically the Great Trek was initiated out of the Cape by farmers who were pushed over the 'edge' by the local government.

As homage to these great pioneers the EDGE roll-out is following the same route. You can clearly see the progress on the coverage map.

Actually more a technology based reason with the kit used in Gauteng and Natal requiring a bit more work. But this is on-going and coverage should increase rapidly.

Vodacom Towers

Hi, my 3G signal is very intermittent and i am considering boosting the signal.
How do i locate the tower closest to me, so that i can point the antennae in the right direction

I was thinking maybe VC will just skip EDGE and just jump to 3G/HSDPA and everyone else have none 3G devices can just go scrE* themselves with GPRS.......

No, although the HSDPA network is growing very fast (more than 2000 towers, at present), the EDGE network will also be extended.

Last stats I saw, showed the VC EDGE network to have a larger (but more biased to the south) footprint, in South Africa.

When, if ever, will EDGE reach eastern Mpumalanga?

I can see it.

Did you use a direct (saved) link, or navigate via the menu's?

It used to be on an IP, but I asked them a while ago to rather use a URL, which I see is now the case.

Having EDGE as would be pretty cool, so if something happens to the 3G network at least we're not stuck with 40kbit speeds ...

We need a decent speed backup - so I'm glad they're not skipping EDGE ;)

Funny, I used the link provided in the first post. After going back and navigating around a bit, I found this link

Ajax, I fixed the link in my original post - the post was about 2 years old and obviously the URL has changed since then. Thanks for the updated URL.

aah, I didn't see that the thread had been resurrected from the electronic abyss ;)

My house is still officially out of 3G coverage and I'm getting -91dBm HSDPA:D

In most cases, the coverage map is a bit on the conservative side to prevent giving people false hope. This is to prevent giving the sceptics another stick with which to beat Vodacom for false advertising or ripping the customers off, etc. ;)

However, there are still cases where the map may indicate coverage but there is no coverage. The coverage predictions are done on a planning tool which takes into account the general terrain and clutter (trees, buildings, etc.) but this geographical information is not always 100% due to erection of new buildings, trees which have grown, etc. It is merely meant as an indication and it is still preferable to check the signal at one's residence before buying any 3G contract. This can normally be done using a 3G phone or a borrowed datacard, etc. and should give a indication of what sort of performance you can expect.

How does one ask Vodacom to look into their coverage in a certain area?

I'm thinking particularly of a short (1km) stretch of road in an urban area where calls are dropped when driving thru.
