Not really a broadband query but wanted to ask if there is a way around this.

My Dad's old Sim card went all faulty. So he went and got a new one and they told him to phone 100, and follow the prompts. He did that and the first prompt said if you want to allocate a new number, press one. Which he did.

I shouted noooo..., and he shut off right away, phoned again and spoke to an operator and they said that he now as to go buy a new Sim card AGAIN!.

Surely this cant be right, and if it is.. It seems like a clever money making scheme as I am sure there are hundreds of people do this and end up having to go back.

SO anyway, is this really how it works or does he have to drive back into town to get a new card?

I am affraid so. Once a sim has been assigned a number it can not be changed to another one. Also, when a sim has been de-actived due to a sim swop being performed it can never be re-activated again due to security reasons. Not a money making scheme. Just select the correct option. I am assuming he is on prepaid?

If you do need to buy another sim card, get it from Clicks - R3 ;)

Pick n Pay 99c
aaaahhh, was just thinking about the days when a prepaid simcard cost R150, when prepaid just came out

I just 100'd a new simcard this morning, to get it activated... cant recall it asking me for "new" number.... maybe he pressed some other options? but then... I have been known to have short attention span :-(

Did you get a replacement sim or a new prepaid sim?

He is on Contract. Hell, he has had the number for as far back as I can remember when his company bought them all those brick phones.

I guess its not that expensive then if that is the price. His only problem is he stays in the middle of no where and is about 20km from any place that sells new SIM cards. I guess I'll try pick one up for him tonight when I get back into civilization and bring it to him tomorrow

16K simcard

My simcard is 7/8 years old, still working, but it is a 16K one.

Any particular benefit/advantage for me to update/change to a 32K one?

Dont worry, I think you bought the wrong sim... a replacement sim is activated by the dealer or head office, you do not do the sim swap yourself.

He drove though to the dealer at Alberton city this afternoon. They checked his old sim and gave him a new sim starter pack. They said thats how it works now.. from the lady he spoke to afterwards she explained his only stuff up was hitting one, instead of two. Though I think an option should be added that states "Press 7 if you are sure you want a new number, Or press 0 to go back to the main menu and press 2 to have an operator assign an old number to this SIM"

As crap as they are... I'm glad i'm on Cell C and dont have to battle with all this BS

@ Astound.....32K is now also old news....we now give you shiny 64K sim cards :-)

If he is on contract then I dont think you can do the sim swop yourself. U need to get a replacement sim @ your dealer and they activate it for him. He needs to take his ID with him and company letter requesting the sim swop. (Company letter only required for company lines)

@ CeeBee, the prepaid sim you asked me about this morning was not a MSISDN'less starter pack and therefore you likely would not have had the option of "for a new number". Your prepaid sp already had a number assigned.

HAHA HAHA..64k is also old news....Get a 128k sim swop.It sell for R99.You can store 500 numbers. The 128k sim is only used for sim swops and not new connections

Hmm so are you all telling me the Vodocom shop gave him the wrong card? He is gonna be peeved if he drives all the way out again tomorrow and they give him the wrong one again

I had a function this evening and never got to pick one up for him, I was thinking of getting one in the morning, but now I'm not sure what I should get for him? The prepaid link above was exactly what they gave him

He did.. I got to work this morning and he had got my brother-in-law to bring him one.

I showed him the thread and he phoned in to customer care to confirm and yeah, you are all right. This was followed by a string of foul words after he put the phone down.

He asked me a question "How come the scum of the earth pay as you are allowed to do everything under the sun, But those of us who pay through our #&#*@*@ A$$s cant do jack SH!^"

Of course I burst out laughing, But I think he has a valid question. Surely they could ask you a number of security questions to verify your identity

I dont get it? Would it not be better to require the millions of pay as you clients to bring in their ID books instead of the contract clients. I doubt the contract clients are the ones who are using pay as you go cards which are pretty much disposable to perform illegal activities. Especially since you usually need an ID book anyway to open up a contract? So why now force the contract people to go through the whole thing, But pay as you go can switch cards in the blink of an eye?

I mean my Dad now has two sim cards which can be used for what ever and there is almost no way to trace them to a specific person?

Government confuses me, because it makes no sense at all
