Icasa is not thinking of the investment roll-out required and issuing licences to small start up companies and requiring a 51% BEE shareholding they will definitely be doomed because of the lack of investment to attain national coverage quickly. Considering that we will have between 4-6 licences being issued at the same time depending on the amount of spectrum to be allocated. Icasa should stay within international norms and issue 4 national licences with 30mhz of spectrum and allow for international investors to invest in the networks and make it succeed with a requirement of each licensee having to attain at least a minimum of 33% BEE shareholding within 3 years either by a listing on the stock market or a direct investor. I certainly dont believe the current mobile operators should be considered for any spectrum as that would lessen competition in the market place. The current mobile operators have 900mhz,1800 and 2100mhz spectrum. Issuing them with wimax spectrum would certainly be damaging the market. Overseas countries never issue all the frequency bands to a few operators to
cannibilise the consumers. We in South Africa are desperate for competition. We rely on Vodacom for 3G national coverage and on telkom for National ADSL. No other company offers that to the South African consumer yet. Cell-C has been offered a 3G licence but they not interested in rolling one out. Why not offer that licence to international investors. Icasa is pushing all the wrong buttons and nobodys telling them the right from the wrong. Wake up ICASA and let the new competition roll in. I am led to believe that Certain ICASA people may have some financial interest in the current Operators. Which may be the reason for them mandating stuff which does not suit the country or the peoples needs.

ICASA is ensuring WIMAX fails in South Africa ! WHY ?

Not sure about the financial interests. This whole process of issuing the licenses is getting a bit sad. This should have been auctioned off to pre approved bidders long ago. Pity, the idea is sound, just the implementation seems a bit poor.

Spectrum Auctioning: DoT may keep slots of 5MHz for auctioning to allow more WiMax players
TT Correspondent | New Delhi | 31 Mar 2008

The DoT is reportedly considering auctioning spectrum in slabs of 5MHz instead of the earlier consideration of 10 MHz in a bid to enable more WiMax players to receive spectrum.

DoT has earmarked 80MHz of spectrum in the 2.5MHz band and is planning to allow each operator to bid for four slots which means that a successful bidder stands to receive upto 20MHz of spectrum.

Earlier Trai had recommended slots of 10MHz and had not specified the maximum amount of bandwidth for which an operator can bid for

This all depends on what your objective is. If you wish to provide a 'fast Internet' type service (512Kbps - 1Mbps) then yes it probably is.

However if you wish to provide a true Broadband service (1Mbps - 4Mbps) in highly dense urban environments then it is certainly not.

Thanks for making this clear.

Other options for the few .............

If you looking for higher speeds in the Dense urban areas then you got,
Telkom, MTN and Vodacom to supply you with that ................7.2Mps

To connect the rest at least 1Mps the Wimax Operators have to do just that.................4 the millions Unconnected !
