I'd hardly call that self evident. Range is dependent on antenna, power, shielding, frequency, etc, etc. It's short range because it's designed to be short range - could be inductive or active.

Edit: Actually, I highly doubt it's inductive. I'm no antenna designer, but I doubt you'd get 1m inductive range without the antenna taking up most of the door.

The key-less entry stuff is transponder based, just like the immobiliser is. There's a transponder in the key body.
I guess it's possible to clone that transponder as well, but probably not quite as easy as harvesting a transmission from a remote which travels a LOT further (I can unlock my car from nearly 30m away)

Actually, the key-less entry system (on the systems I know of) only simulates a button press on the remote. The remote still sends a standard keyfob signal to the car for unlock, lock and start conditions.

the vehicle just lets the remote 'know' (that includes any keyless remote in range) that it needs a code, the remote still sends the response via the 433 or 868MHz return radio frequency return path that can be monitored.
