New Z68 chipset allows for much higher overclocks

Better voltage delivery among other things I'd assume.
But i've only seen landmark with these new boards..
 
From what I understand, this new chipset won't allow you to overclock the 2500k CPU any further than what the P67 chipset allowed.
It seems to me like the Z68 chipset is simply the H67 & P67 features combined, which means that you can make use of the onboard HD graphics & overclock the CPU.

The main reason that you'd want to use the onboard HD graphics & dedicated graphics card is for video encoding/decoding performance (with the onboard HD graphics) and gaming performance (with the dedicated graphics).
 
Do they have prices for them?

I know 5.7ghz has no real benefits in real world terms, except maybe folding faster but i mean an extra 700mhz OC just from a slightly better chipset.
Makes most of us P68 users feel a little ripped off :(

With ivy Bridge going 22nm, i smell 6ghz+ on the horizon, just wish they would drop this year.
 
I think it's more of a feature add than anything. Bit of a gimmick if you ask me. I won't make use of the onboard GPU, neither would I use the SSD Caching. I run my OS on my 128Gb SSD and a few app's / games so there is no space to spare for SSD Caching. In terms of overclocking I don't think it would be much superior to the P68 boards.

Will phase out the P68 soon also i guess with a nice R300/R400 premium on top also.
Z68 seems good for HTPC though.

Currently doing a build for my dad who is in no rush to get going but should i go Sandy Bridge or wait till Ivy bridge?
 
Depends, what are your dad's requirements? What will he be using it for.

You decide if it's worth going from something like a P8P67 for R1275 to that...?:confused:

The only other additional benefit you get is access to the HD Graphics 2000/3000 engine's clocks. Frankly, though, gamers will add their own discrete cards and not bother with tweaking the integrated logic."

I don't know why you'd want to use Z68 for an HTPC, when an entry level H67 chipset and a cheap i3 CPU would suffice, unless you're going to use it for media transcoding too.

I don't know where you guys get the P68 from, because the P68 chipset isn't available yet.

When Intel’s Sandy Bridge range of LGA1155 Core CPUs launched, you had to choose whether you wanted to overclock the CPU or use its integrated Processor Graphics unit (PG) – either you bought a P67 motherboard and overclocked the CPU, or you bought an H67 motherboard and made a more modest PC. However, for months there has been a mythical third option; one that would let you overclock the CPU while enabling its integrated PG: the Z68 chipset.

The benefits of Z68 initially sounded pretty niche – it would be ideal for a PC that sees plenty of work but no gaming (beyond Flash-based games and casual fare). However, in the build up to its launch, motherboard manufacturers started to talk about what they could do with a chipset that could see the PG and know how to overclock: hybrid graphics.

I really don't see a point in going for the Z68 chipset, unless you're going to use the PC for video transcoding.

Really? Where does this "just over R1000" come from? My P8P67 Evo was 2200 at the cheapest place I could find, R2500 at most others.

Unless you're talking about the LE maybe, the one that has all the good stuff taken out?
 
MMM, I was discussing something similar in the GPU thread. Definately worth it to get the z68 / x68 chipset over the 67 - I mean really, who actually doesn't have a descrete graphics card?

Sorry TJ99, I meant 'stock-ish' P8P67 (The P8P67-M) although that's R1275 though, but it's still not R2k..

Ah, OK then.. Because the plain vanilla P8P67 is about R1700. The M and LE versions are the "low-fat" variants, so it's not really fair to compare them to the high end Z68 ones, of course those will be more expensive.

If you compare like and like the Z68 is only about R200 more expensive than the equivalent P67..
 
The Z68 is not supposed to be an equivalent - it's more the enthusiast version of the LGA1155 motherboard setup - better overclocking and more feature riddled

Fair enough, but what I meant was that most users only really need a P8P67-M or P8P67-M Pro and they're R1275 and R1520. Not meant to be comparison for the Z-series, more like a "you don't need the Z, because you can just get these"... But I do understand your view;)

It's just that most will be fine on the p67 and I don't see the increase in price equivalent to the 'extra overclock' capabilities. Although I'll keep quiet now as I'll most likely be pushing Z's in a few weeks.

Actually, I think I've heard somewhere that the P67 will be discontinued, and only the Z68 and H67's (or maybe H61) will be kept. I think most ordinary users (meaning not gaming or overclocking), will rather use the H67's anyways since they're even cheaper.

From what I gather, the Z68's "extra overclocking features' just mean more power phases, which the likes of Asus and Gigabyte already build into their P67 boards. The only real benefit I see is actually being able to use the video encoding technology. Although to be honest, even without it, my 2600k is ridiculously fast compared to first-generation i7's, for video encoding.
