Newbie Nas!

I’ve got one Plex server with 5-6 clients running happily for years now.

Do you pay for the Plex Pass? I stopped using plex for a while. I started again recently, everything working well, except for one of the "mobile clients". only plays for one minute then stops saying I need to buy the pass. Not doing the same on the desktop client/player though sitting on a different laptop from the plex server

Look, I used to be a huge fan of Plex, I recommended it to everyone. I have quite a long and good history with it.
However, Kodi adds more. But that's for another thread. I think @Rouxenator started a Plex vs. Kodi Thread.

Yes obviously for high seas add-ons Kodi wins out.

Plex has a lot of them as well with a bit of effort but never been my use case.

I also recalled that thread was deeply uninformed and biased.

Yeah the apps either require Plex Pass or a once off purchase of the App.

I’ve had a lifetime Plex Pass since about two years ago when it was on special.

But I owned the apps long before that.

It’s definitely a bad deal on a monthly subs basis. Buy lifetime or don’t bother.

I never really notice how many extras you get with a Plex Pass until someone asks how to do this with Plex and I think that's super easy, takes less than a minute and then I realise that's a Plex Pass feature. I can't live without Plex, my first Plex Media Server was on a Hackintosh netbook install I did because it was still OSX only at that point and I've had my Plex Pass since 2013.

Yeah it does tend to be features you don't really NEED but that you get so used to and if you take them away it feels a bit broken.

Think I've used Plex since the very beginning when I first moved away from XBMC on an actual Xbox where it all started.

The best part is having full access to all my stuff when I'm travelling.

Not going the route of building the old POS into a NAS, see it is only a celeron cpu....

I wondered if this

QNAP.jpg

would be a better bet than the synology in my OP?

So many on here have complex NAS and Plex setups... In this day and age why does people still bother with downloading content and hoarding it when you can stream from several sites/apps which makes it so much easier.
It boggles my mind.

Consider that legit streaming services have licensing agreements for all non-original content and when they're not renewed or the creators decide to pull a Disney it's taken off the service. So bye-bye IASIP, Breaking Bad and SG1.

Legit streamlining? As if the people running these complex media hoarding home setups are doing legit downloads? I doubt it.

What if you don't have the bandwidth, or connectivity to stream?

As I stated I am a Newbie to this...

I now realize that I cannot stream PLEX from a NAS (the cheap one) as the encoding on the fly is too much for a NAS and will cause stuttering.

But can I use the the NAS as additional storage for my P4 PC and just continue using the PLEX server on the PC to stream video to various household devices?

Yes, you can.

Bonus points if the NAS can do iSCSI, then you just set up an iSCSI connection between the NAS and your PC, it will then see the NAS as a local hard drive.

If not, then file and folders (a la Samba) on the NAS that only your PC can access, and from there, streamed to the rest of Namibia+gemsbok.

You'll need an extra NIC in your desktop PC to alleviate bandwidth issues on your LAN.

Why don't you just connect your drives to your main PC, connect it to your switch and connect the TV to the switch as well and stream from there?

All four of my sata ports are used and I don't wish to utilize all my USB ports, besides I like the idea of tinkering around with a NAS.......... what could go wrong? ;)

An underpowered investment is what can go wrong.
