I am in the process of buying an unlocked 3g/HSDPA card (a vodacom one).

I bought a MTN PAYG simcard from Checkers today. It's a 32k simcard. Now once I've activated it (by making the first call or whatever) what else do I need to do to get it to be data enabled? Also will the 32k simcard be ok for 3g/HDSPA or should I go try get a 64k simcard?

My thought is to use the card with prepaid data bundles :-)

I tried searching, but I suck at it :D

Hi

Dial *123# SEND

The settings should be sent to you. You need to do this in a phone or you must phone customer service to activate the WAP settings.

I also use the perpaid and I load R10 at a time onto my Data Bundle and I find that I use R60-R70 per month so I have 8 cards. At R1.99 a go it does not break the bank. PnP gives you R10 FREE when you first recharge the card.

If you use more than R100 then load R100 on one card and R10 on a few cards. It only becomes signifiantly cheaper when you use over R200 because you get 350MB for R220 R0.63 per MB.

Enjoy

Tried the settings via *123# and I get the settings, but I can't even load GPRS on my phone. MTN doesn't answer their phones (tried calling 173, option 5) bloody hell. Been holding for 25 minutes already.

Edit -> I got it working :-D

Boy, one must be carefull with this 3g stuff...I quickly put in my vodacom card to see if it works...some light surfing and I've used 4 megs (that's R8). Time to get a bundle on my mtn sim.

PS. Is there a website where I can check usage or remining bundles etc for MTN?

to avoid all this hassle - you can try Virgin mobile - 50c/mb - only problem - make sure it's good in your area

Solution...

Yea, prob is gotta take the sim out of the 3g card, swap the sim in my phone. Hassle :/ Any online way? Now that would be smart...

Hope this helps....

You probably use the same teabag twice :).

Thanks, I will try that later when I connect my 3g card :-)

I know this wasn't aimed at me, but I hate using the tea bag more than once...even to make two cups of tea. :-) wierd.

I want 3g/HSPDA speeds - and virgin mobile sucks in my area...I tried a friends sim before I went the MTN route. At least with MTN I'm only paying R1 a meg...buy some discounted airtime and that goes down...

I've managed to connect with the MTN Sim, so I'm sorted in that reguard.
BUT does MTN have a website where you can check your data usage and add bundles without having to take the sim out of the 3g card and put it in a phone?

Good day,

If you're with MTNSP you can set up a 16202 password on the 808 helpline or you can register on www.mtnsp.co.za and use the MTNACTIVE site to check your data usage, I'm not sure if it includes loading bundles, but if not maybe that's something they can look at adding into the system.

Thanks MTNDD

Monitoring for Contracts only?

Yeah I know what you mean there should be a web interfact for prepaid sub't to load data bundles, something I'll take up and advise on.

Something that I believe needs to be available
