Newbie [Technical] questions

Use the ones in my sig - set the dial-up ras mtu to 1352 (don't set on the net adapter).

This should be done only on the pc that is connected and dials iburst.
If you are using a router or linux firewall you will have to set it on the router or linux pc.

This theory of setting on every pc on the entire network just causes endless problems which weren't needed in the first place.

In some situations the UTD will not even connect with mtu not set.

I asked WBS why my Iburst to Iburst VPN is only running at 64K.... The answer... MTU .... It's not the normal 1352, for VPN they want 1324. Has anyone else had better speeds for VPN?

Info on iBursts Service

iBurst have just increased their coverage to Nelspruit. Would like to look at their service, am outside ADLSL range. Have looked at Sentech  Sentech service is a myth. Dont think they know the word service. Speed's very slow 10-20 kb/s during peak hours. Tower signals dissapear or cannot get on the network (Remote Network will not respond). Before I go and tie myself into a 2 year contract. I would like to get some feedback from clients who using iBurst services. Happy or unhappy. Had a salesman here, wants to sell the world but cannot answer some hard questions. Any info will be much appreciated.

Welcome. Just read the forum. There are many threads evaluating Iburst here.

And then... ask your hard questions.

Well, its quite a bit better than dial-up. 64kb and up for multi-threaded downloads. Its also technically unshaped, but only P2P's that work are DC++ (any servers) and Soulseek. Maby a few more, those are all I know.

@Converge-it, I would think that if you have good coverage the Nelspruit tower should be pretty good for you. Im thinking that its pretty unsaturated, having just gone up in a smallish, not so broadband orientated area.

Hello, I received iBurst yesterday and used it for the first time last night.

I am using the laptop PCMCIA with external antenna - Signal strength 100% - I downloaded 2 or 3 +- 5MB files last night - browsing was fine etc everything is great I was just wondering, my downloads obviously started up high and settled on 29KB/Sec which is around a 256k line - what happened to 1MBPS?

Also, I left it on over night and saw that this morning around 8AM it disconnected and when I reconnected the DNS wasnt working, I couldnt traceroute - nothing until I restarted my laptop and then it connected fine.

I am at work now but have set up dynamic dns and a webserver to see if its online and it is currently offline - I am wondering if this disconnection thing has happened again? Does anyone know anything about these dead-connections?

Also, I want iBurst to autoreconnect when its disconnected - I changed the iBurst PPPOE settings in my network connections to auto redial etc. - will this work?

Thanks
Mike

Im not shure if you have sorted this out yet.. but those speeds of 29kb come form not using a download manager with multi-threaded downloaded. That way you dont start high and settle to some speed, it just stays around whatever speed you get, sounds lke you are using IE downlod manager

Also, I believe setting the Windows redail setting to auto doesnt work for Iburst, the easiest thing is actually to buy a router. But not much of an option for you if you are using a Laptop for mobility. So you do get an app which does this... I found it a while ago for someone else on the forum, but this time im too lazy. Type something like "auto-reconnector internet" into google and you should find it.

EDIT: Oh wait sily me, I see that you were the guy who I found that app for.. nevermind then.. so pretty useless post it seems. Unless someone doesnt know about multi-threaded downloads... :(

Dr TCP IP Settings I am posting here as I have removed them from my signature

Iburst Settings: MTU: 1352, RWIN: 255555, wscale: on, tstamp: off, select Acks: yes, mtu path disc: yes, black hole: no, max dupl Ack: 1, ttl: 64

This is not necessarily a tech question so i do apologise - Is it safe / standard practise to email someone interested in buying a desktop modem your UTID no??

To change passwords for my iburst clients all I had to do was quite the UTID..so I rate no

When i bought my modem i asked the previous owner the UTID no. to check if the modem was not stolen/blacklisted. I wouldn't give it out if my accounts where still active though.

Modem UTID - why it might be needed

When we buy 2nd hand modems we ALWAYS ask for the UTID. The reason is that we have had several instances where users whose accounts have been blacklisted for lack of payment try to sell us a modem. If we buy it, iBurst will not release it to us as it is still listed as belonging to an unpaid account. So we always ask for the information.

Hi Friend,

You get the signal strength and tower you are using ,then when iConnect is ready you can use the app instead

Here, firmware should be updated "Over the air". Check the current firmware on you UTD and compare it with the version on WBS website. If you have this version, then you are up to date.

Thanks,

Parkar
