Newer dual core versus core2duo

Hi there,
I am just looking for the general opinion of people here.
I have two cpu's a E5400 2.7GHz dual core, and a E7200 2.54GHz cpu. I need to setup the computer for some general sensor and monitoring software (Paessler PRTG) which will work fine on either of them... but I would like to think the slightly older core2duo would overall be the better option as later I will be adding our anti virus server software to the same computer as well.

Even though the core2duo is slightly older and a slightly "slower" cpu, I would think it is still the better option for number crunching?
 
Dual core is rubbish. Prev gen & superseded by core2duo. Get the c2d & overclock it if just must.

Edit: Why do you need an AV for numbercrunching?

LOL. You just proved you don't know anything.

E5400, E7200, i3 530, Athlon 4600+ are all dual cores.

The E7200 has more cache than the E5400. I'd say rather use the higher clocked E5400. The 1mb difference in L2 cache won't make that much of a difference.

The antivirus is the actual AV Server which distributes the workstation package/updates to about 100 workstations and monitors their status. It is the PRTG software which is the main hog. It monitors 100's of nodes across the network every 30 to 60 seconds and generates a real time set of graphs and alarms.
I must admit, I would also tend to move to the c2d, as I have never thought much of the dual core, kind of a beefed up celeron. It is interesting what qwikslver said. Will see if there are any other comments.

"Dual core" in an Intel context doesn't just mean it has two of the things, it refers to specific brand. Pentium Dual Core

Distinct from this is the Core 2 Duo brand.

The Athlon 4600+ falls under neither brand, but it also has *two* of the cores. ;)

Back on topic: The insane thing is that Quicksilver, despite terminology issues, isn't that far off the mark. Both of those things are based on the same core: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfdale_%28microprocessor%29#Wolfdale-3M. Starting to hate Intel....moving new tech into old brand names. fckers.

The E7200 is clearly superior though:
SSE4.1 support (Relevant depending on the type of number crunching)
1MB more L2 cache
266mhz higher FSB

The E5400 has going in its favour:
166mhz higher CPU clock
 
The dual core is faster. The E7*** series is quite old. The E5*** series is based on newer tech which is faster clock for clock. Basically the E5*** is the same chip as the E8*** but with smaller cache.

You can also compare laptop cpus similarly. The older T7*** series is getting beaten by the newer T4*** series. Bigger numbers are not always better.

Not quite, the E5xxx and E7xxx are very similar. Both the E5400 and E7500 were released during January 2009, the E8600 was released in August 2008.

E8xxx = Wolfdale
E5xxx E7xxx = Wolfdale-3M
 
The newer dual cores are fine, and as SaiyanZ said, they actually run quicker according to the online benchmarks. This is the reason I went for the dual core when I was cash strapped with no PC :P

Running mine (see sig) at 3.36GHz as if this was the stock speed, no extra voltage, nada and runs as cool as a... cucumber? Heard some people get these up to 4GHz, but I only have a stock cooler, so will stick in the "safe" zone.
