This might seem like a silly question but I am seeing the term 'news server' used in the features for ISPs on these forums. What is a news server exactly and what are the benifits of having accesss to an ISPs news server?

Thank you Burn.

So it is basically a way to file share that is not P2P and is usually restricted to the ISPs network?

Yes and no.

It is a way to share files, but only two are free, Is and saix, theyre restricted to either is or saix networks. They have short retention of files and can sometimes be really slow.

You do get paid for news servers like Giganews, Astraweb and easynews.
Giganews and Astraweb are great for massive volume, but they have no binary search function. You would have to get NZB's to download from them properly

Easynews is a little more expensive, but it has a http search facility, that allows you to search nicely, and allows for http downloads (not shaped) along with nntp downloads (sometimes shaped).

Can someone tell me why in Alt.Binz I can only download 1 file at a time? I added 5 nzb's but only the top one downloads and when thats done, will it move to the next one.
