Hi Guys,

I feel as though i been hibernating for a long long time, only now i see people talking about news servers, i been using torrents all along.

I have a small idea, but not entirely sure, could someone please explain what exactly are news servers and how do they work, from what i have heard its way better than torrents.

Sorry if the question is dumb, but id like to get out of this hibernation mode lol.

And if anybody has any referrals to good news servers, preferrably free ones:)

Thanks

Torrents will still be the preferred download method for files which are a bit old - stick with them for that reason when needed

News servers in the easiest terms, are ISP hosted - files get uploaded and "spanned" across various zip type files.
Your machine (when using relevant software (newsleecher, sabNZBd+ etc) will then download these zipped files, and rejoin them - forming file again.
The issue is retention (paid for news servers keep these files a while longer)

There are no dumb questions, only people who stay uninformed

Your ISP hosts news files, MWEB, Telkom etc all have their own, and are normally named news.mweb.co.za, news.isdsl.net, etc

I would recommend getting an integrated setup, where SABNZBD does all your downloading.
invest some time and research reading up on Openelec - but more specifically Sickbeard, SABNZBD,CouchPotato,Headphones,Transmission integration

Enter your news settings into grabit, alt.binz, etc.
No username or password for local servers.
Generally port 119
