ok. i've been hearing tonnes about these "news servers" but i know absolutely nothing about them. i just use torrents for my P2P. what exactly are news groups and what are their advantages? im an Openweb user and i now have access to the IS news server... but i havnt a clue what that means :)

You use (http://www.binsearch.info/) to search for stuff on the news server. Grabit to download the stuff from the news server. Quickpar for handeling .par files.

It basicly a comunity news server where ppl upload stuff for you to download again.

Okay spiderz, why is it said that the SAIX news server is useless? Let's say I'm looking for an mp3 by Chris Chameleon, would I be able to find it on binsearch or newzleech? Also, can I use the SAIX news server to download it, or does it only work on IS ?

SAIX sucks because they have little or no retention of binary files. You'd be able to find where it should be - on a decent news server - but the actual file would be missing on SAIX.

In that case I'd consider a IS account or a paid news server like Easynews.

Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet for some general info.

"Retention baby" - it is all about retention. A news group server retains(stores) files for a given period of time - most good servers have this around 60 days. So, a good server will keep a copy of a file for up to 60 days (the IS one has been known to keep them longer - I routinely download files in the 69 day region).

The SAIX "news server" has a retention period you can measure in nanoseconds - I have yet to be able to download anything at all (even files which are 1 day old) from that pile of steaming you-know-what.

hmmmm. i know the IS news server is news.is.co.za...... but how do i get there (sorry, i must sound really dumb... im not usually this bad, i swear). what do i use to see what files are on the IS news server. does this work like most p2p things where everyuser uploads and downloads?

hmmmm not working.. i've got grabit. so, i put the news serv adress in, my username and password (from openweb) and then a port?... what port should i use?

Don't use a username and password, especially don't use your real details in grabit *hackers* :) Try it without the username and pass. Not sure about the port, I'm on SAIX

You didn't follow bwana's advice on post 7 hey? did you? :D

search for the stuff on newsbin/binsearch. Download the .nfo file to your pc, and then import it into Grabit.
