To beginners:how to download from news server?

I was just wondering how many headers should one download?
I've set mine to download 100000 headers.
Is that to little?
Or am I asking a stupid question here?

 headers
Half your cap is going to go on those things.
Go to newzleech.com, search for your stuff, save the nzb, then use your newsreader to import the nzb

Other search sites I use:
binaries.nl
yabse.com

Those sites are all great for those who know/have been using the news server, but i think you might find the beginners will end up downloading crap quality/half missing/without pars.

At least with the other indexed nzb sites, chances are the quality is ok, you can see comments on whether it works and you know its fully there...

Eish explaining pars to a beginner would be a mission. Anyway it's worth getting an application called QuickPar while you're getting your newsreader and getting started with newsgroups. It'll save you trouble later on when you run into missing files.

EDIT: There's an excellent FAQ site here that basically explains everything one needs to know regarding newsgroups, including pars http://www.ozinsight.com/faqs.html

For an idea of whats new and available I usually start off at vcdquality.com then do a search for the exact "folder" name with newzleech.com. Less crap that way.

I hate the US summer. Nothing worth watching until Sept.

Ahh thanks guys.
The nbz files saves lots of time and bw.
:D
Yeah - stay away from the headers :)

Try getting your hands on the following

Newsbin v5 Select "File-Load plugin data..." to load the nzb file. Which you have hopefully aquired from newsleech or other usenet search app

Quickpar

Look for the .par2 file and after downloading, open with quickpar. Then you will be able to monitor your downloads. I only download divx stuff, look out for dvd rips and avoid cam or (filmed in cinema) rips. **** quality. Begin with some smaller files to get the hang of things, and enjoy.

I was wondering how often does the IS server synchronize with the international servers?

From whats been said here I'm guessing its on demand. As someone requests a file its added locally.

Others also claim that its fed by giganews.

What software are you using?

I tried NewsbinPro but could get nothing readable down, use-ing GrabIt now. Works fine and can still import nzb files.

And are there any local usenet search engines?

I dont think so - it might even be worth it accessing the likes of binsearch via dialup, creating a massive queue and then switching back to adsl if your capped internationally.
