Newsgroups

yeah... I am also downloading full speed from mweb news...... at the moment

Love the cached content,,,

I'm being shaped on newsgroups using ssl over port 80 - getting 23kb/s. Cheers mweb.

Well then the shaping is working.

Your trying to bypass the shaping - nntp is port 119 - anything else like nntp over http, or over ssl/ftp etc etc is trying to bypass shaping and most ISP's frown upon this. I know its mentioned in Mwebs T&Cs.

For content thats only a few days old it should be all cached locally on the servers for anything else I'd use a real usenet provider (astraweb/en/giganews etc)

Your are allowed nttp over SSL.... I get all my astroweb over SSL... and trust me mweb also shape that.

But the locally cached stuff is nice to have... Full speed anytime of the day for cached items

Mmm - interesting. I'll still stick to normal NNTP though. :)

I know what you mean about the local cached stuff. During the day I get 30-50Kbps. Every now again I see my bandwidth going to 100%....aaahhhh locally cached.

Now if only Mweb would increase their retention time to 500 days :)

We can't generically shape SSL, or other methods of encryption that are employed on news traffic as there's no way of determining the nature of the encrypted content and we would potentially be hurting valid uses of encryption.

What does happen is that if we become aware of NNTP providers that operate on these protocols then they will be specifically added to the shaping rules.

If however you do come across such a service that we are not shaping then the onus is on you to 'play nice' and if we detect high levels of encrypted traffic on your account that are consistent with this type of behavior then you will receive a warning.

At that point, you would have the choice to either change your behavior, or provide us with the necessary detail to assist us in updating the shaping rules to cover the service you are using.

Now if you really wanted to be good MWEB citizens and you are already using a service like this which doesn't appear to be shaped you can always drop me a PM with the details and I'll quite happily pass it on to the network engineers to update their database :)
