Has anyone else experience problems with the telkom newsgroup site? Can only access the directory but trying to download headers is says it does not carry the group??
Pete

What kind of news do they cover? Why not just use news24? Or mnet?

great replies.

@op - have you considered they don't actually carry the group?

Local usenet servers are mediocre at best... if you have an uncapped account i'd recommend an international paid server

never heard of a provider giving ssh, you sure its not ssl? Either way i don't think it's against their fup as those ports will be shaped

it is considered to be trying to avert shaping. by mweb at least.

Hows it averting the shaping policy if it's being shaped? And im referring to the standard SSL ports utilized by most usenet servers ( i.e. 443 and 563 ). Not the ones allowing SSL over port 80, that pretty much explains itself.

I use to be on astraweb using SSL on port 443 and I can confirm it is being shaped... terribly aswell

i would agree with you that the ports should be known and thus not be an issue. but the question was raised once and that was the answer. maybe it was a case of specifically addressing ssl over a non-standard port; but that was never explicitly stated.

edit: it comes back to me now. ssl is not only a nntp port. so mweb i think at the time allowed full speed over the port. it may be the case that they now shape it regardless.

I'm being shaped on newsgroups using ssl over port 80 - getting 23kb/s. Cheers mweb.
