Nexus 6 smartphone unveiled

Can someone explain to me why they decided to go with 1) a phablet sized monster of a phone which most people would never consider to buy and 2) a phone costing $650 which is a much higher price than previous Nexus devices? I just don't get it.

Why the hell are these guys pushing for us to carry around computers barely smaller than desktops? What's wrong with phones in the 4.5" to 5" range? It's almost like they literally got the 6" idea from the name "Nexus 6". End of next year we'll all carry Nexus 7 tablets.

I think most manufacturers are moving to bigger devices... although I'm also disappointed that there's no 5" device (and hell, 3 years ago I would have been appalled at even that size).

In terms of the price - seems as Google is tired of subsidizing the Nexus line. It is disappointed. Now I might as well buy the wife an iPhone 6 (from the US via a colleague).

It's only about a millimeter taller than an iPhone 6 Plus, and people are flocking toward that.

Looking at the specs on this the price isn't that crazy. The previous ones were a steal at their price points, but they've gone decidedly more premium this time round.

I can understand the push for a more premium (and thus expensive) phone. But it is somewhat disappointing compared to the great value previous iterations offered.

About the size: I'm sure there are many many people who would be just fine with such a big phone. The popularity of the Note and the iPhone 6 Plus, like you pointed out, is testament to that. But does Samsung sell more Galaxy Note's that Galaxy S's? And will Apple sell more iPhone 6 Plus's than iPhone 6 devices?

The smaller phones (4.5"-5") is still way more popular from what I can tell, so this move from Google seems bizarre. I have not heard one convincing reason why they would make such a decision.

Yeah, I agree.

What would make sense is if they beefed up the Nexus 5 and kept that on. Then they have that one in that category, but also a phablet to compete with the Note and iPhone 6 Plus. Not sure if they're going to do that, though. Although they have it on their Nexus landing page, complete with Lollipop animations and all. Maybe they think it's still good enough.

No LED Flash???

I use that often as a torch on my current phone :p

Edit: Never mind, it has a Dual LED Flash....

A 6" display isn't that monstrous with the thin bezels on the Nexus 6. The dimensions of the device are probably no bigger than my OnePlus One with its 5.5" display. I love the size and won't be able to go back to small screens.

A huge benefit of a large device is having more internal space to work with. The Nexus 6 has the best specs a phone can have, and the optical image stabilisation is probably what pushed Google/Motorola to go a tad bigger. The iPhone 6 Plus has it but not the 6, so it's likely space consuming.

As for the higher price, Google clearly wants to set the benchmark for other manufacturers to strive towards. They can't achieve that on a budget.

The size and no SD card slot won't do it for me. Shame really..... would have liked to upgrade to it next year. The Nexus 9 however might be the tablet for me.

the no sd card slot is not that bad really.

agree 6" is terrible.
