Public healthcare is great in theory, because it gets around the problem that corporations have your health in mind only so long as it makes them money. If you have a condition that is not profitable for them to treat or cure, tough luck.

On the other hand, the problem with NHI is that we just dont have the money for it. We are a third world country, not a first world country. We cant even run the state hospitals we have now, how is throwing money at the problem going to help? And where is the money going to come from? I know the obvious answer to that - you and me.

If they want to do this, they need to make it so that the charge comes out of VAT and not income tax. Everybody pays VAT and no one can avoid it. That and they need to think smaller. This grand plan is all well and good if you have 50 million educated high earning tax payers, but since we have 5 million or so registered tax payers, it just will not work. And it would be a whole lot easier if the ANC wasnt wasting money on luxury cars, overseas trips and KFC and Johnny Blue banquets, but I digress.

The ANC has no desire to raise their support base out of poverty.

Congrats for the strawman. You didn't address my argument. If everyone can afford to have private insurance, would you advocate universal healthcare? If so, why?

The only myth is that an efficent state service provides dedicated resouces for 100% of the population, and that the remainder is wasted. What an infantile notion.

"Needs and desires" is a value judgement, typically people who perceive they are of higher risk buy private health insurance.

Want to see another value judgement....

Private healthcare has 20% paying for 25% (5% profit) with an overall higher risk & cost per person is high PLUS you have associate productivity and socio-economic problems for the uninsured.

How is saying that the uninsured will have increased productivity and less socio-economic problems, not a value judgement. Are you not judging the benefits of NHI to be greater than the perceived costs?

If you are not making any such judgement, then why implement it. If the benefits don't > costs, why do it?

You assume that the uninsured don't work hard, and then lead to the assumption that them being healthy won't positively effect their productivity.

No, but I know some will, some won't. Some people will have increased productivity, some will have decreased productivity. YOU are the one making the value judgements as you are the one saying we must do this and justifying it by saying we would have an increase in productivity.

How do you measure this? Please show me the evidence, which will show both the affects of the NHI on increasing and decreasing productivity and how there is an overall increase.

The services provides service to those who need it and like private institutions provision accordingly. Universal access <> universal service.

The service creates market distortions, removes choice and individual freedom, reduces overall quality of healthcare for the people who can afford health insurance now, increases the costs of those who have private healthcare now and wish to remain on private healthcare.

All so a bunch of liberals can pat themselves on the back, and the ANC can get votes.
