As a absolute beginner to DSLR world, would you buy this lens if under R1000? What would be its typical use (e.g. landscape/portrait)

All the reviews I read says it pretty good plastic. you get what you pay for.

Strengths:

Low cost, good range, sharp centers, good color, lightweight.

Weaknesses:

Weak, plastic filter threads.

Yip it is, Came out just before the Nikon D70 made it's first appearence.

GTi - I noticed that you have a EF-530 on your equipment list. would you recommend it over the SB-600? I am a beginner myself and in the market for an external flash - for a D60.

You decide for yourself. I took the Super coz it's has more zoom and flash power, but the recycle time is faster in the Nikon SB600 brand.
I am happy with the Sigma EF-530 DG SUPER TTL Flash due to the fact it zooms out to 105 mm coz I do alot of party photography at night.
I am just looking for a Diffuser for the flash unit.
