So? Who is going to buy something at the Nikon Demo Clearance sale next weekend?

I am so tempted to get that D7000 at R7999.00.

What are your thoughts on buying demo stock. With binoculars I guess it won't matter but I am a bit cautious about a demo SLR. I can only imagine how many actuations that shutter already has.

Good prices but yeah I would be wary of buying a demo SLR. As you say you can only imagine how many actuations it has.

Its a Demo model I doubt it has a stupid number of actuations, like a demo car its has km's but a small reasonable number. If I was interested in the D7000 I would in line for one especially at that price.

What else do they have that could be of interest, lenses perhaps ?

I hear what you're saying but erm... :erm: Have you seen people testing cameras with high rates of continuous shooting?

I'm pretty sure the cameras on demo at last year's Photo and Film Expo got over 50'000 actuations.

Unfortunaltey I don't think any lenses will be on sale. Maybe they will surprise us. I would love to pick up a 35mm F1.8 at a give-away price!

But you can check the shutter count in the menus somewhere on Nikon bodies.

The count may be high, but I doubt that the wear pattern for a few bursts is the same as the same number of shots over a longer period and possibly multiple shoots. Add to that that the demo hasn't been subjected to "in the field" conditions (unlike cars), I would think the shutter count is less of an issue.
 
Thanks for this thread - wouldn't have known about the sale otherwise.
My D90, 24mm 2.8 lens (brand new!), battery grip, 3 batteries, remote trigger, 18-55 lens and my expensive camera bag were all swiped yesterday morning. Lost 15k worth of gear in an instant. Am absolutely gutted.

No insurance, don't really have the cash to replace it all. Hopefully I can at least get a D90 or D700 body at the sale so I'm not entirely camera-less :(
 
Stopped by the Nikon shop/offices this morning to ask for more detail.
The guy said 3 things that were very interesting:

1. There won't really be crowd control - when they open the doors the people can and probably will stampede in.
2. They aren't just selling demo stock - they're emptying out their whole warehouse of all demo and damaged stock. Anything that has a broken or damaged box, or is missing parts, or is a demo model. So you could likely grab something brand new that just had a smooshed box.
3. The warehouse is apparently quite large, and there will apparently be quite a large amount of stock on sale. So it's not just the bits and pieces that are in their tiny shop.

They will also have multiple pay points, and the sale will be spread out over the entire lobby floor area outside the shop.
 
Well AniV, interesting, on FB they didint want to give any information on the quality of stock. The way I saw it was that would be ond D7000 and 50 people who would like to buy it.... Wasnt thinking of going but might think agian about it. Pity that Nikon doesnt even want to give an indication on stock levels...
 
I am curious to know if what Nikon has listed on their price list is it for the demo sale or are there more items up for sale than listed. Would love to get my hands on some demo lenses.

So pretty much unless I want a coolpix there is no real reason to go.
D7000 is the best thing on sale and at R8000 . R8000 is not a terrific deal, its a fair price, but no a great deal.
 
good to see that they have a list now at last!
But overall, looking for a bargain on a lens, but nothing there.. pity...
 
I dunno, R8000 is pretty good in my opinion. Usually they cost around R12k up.
What I really want is another D90 because I love that camera, can use it with my eyes closed.
The D7000 on discount is the same price as a D90 new. I can't really afford either. Am maxing out my CC and plundering my savings to replace my equipment.

What I REALLY want is to find the bliksem that took my stuff and beat the stuffing out of him/her. And get my stuff back.
2 years of putting together my kit.. My D90 still looks brand new. I look after my gear like gold. And some moron with no appreciation for the equipment, the value (cash and sentimental) or the art on that camera (all my photos!) goes and just takes it.

Sommer getting the hell in all over again :(
 
I got there at 5am, was #6 in the queue. All 5 people before me wanted D7000s. I almost gave up and left, but decided to stay to get a Coolpix for someone else. A little while later the #2 in the queue informed me that she had changed her mind and decided to get a D5100 instead, so that officially made me #5 in the D7000 queue.

We were worried that when they opened the gate it would be a stampede, so after hours of bonding in the cold our group of 8 agreed to stick together and help each other retain our places in the queue. It ended up being unnecessary, because Nikon implemented a very orderly crowd control system with a decent queue and they let the first 3 groups into the building in sets of 5. Everyone was very calm and civilised.

When we got inside, they had 2 extra D7000s, but they were kits with an 18-105 lens for R11200. I didn't have the cash so I stuck with the body only. The 2 gents in the queue behind me took the kits, and that was the end of the D7000s. Right after I paid they announced they had some D90 kits for R8200, but it was too late. I decided to stick with my D7000.

I was really glad I had decided to stay. The first queuers were there at 2am already from Rustenburg. #3 arrived at 3am, #4 at 4am, #5 at 4.45 and me, #6 at 5am sharp. #7 and #8 arrived about 5min apart at 5.15 and 5.20ish. It was worth it to go so early and freeze. We were even there before security!

I have to say, the Nikon staff were incredibly friendly and professional, there was a great vibe, they handed out freebies and coffee to the queuing folks, kept us informed of the status when there was a delay, explained the procedure well.. Lots of staff on hand to answer all questions, everybody got individual service and assistance. It was a great experience.

Eish some people are fscking insane :D There's no way I'd drive out from Rustenburg at 2am and queue for 6 hours to save a few k :p
