Looking to get my first DSLR camera and am between the D3100 and D5100, I know the 5100 is a much better camera but am wondering if it is worth the extra cash? Depending on the bundles and lenses options, it's an extra 1.5 - 2k from what I have seen.

Don't want to get the cheaper option and in 6 months kick myself for not getting the better one! And on the same hand don't want to get the more expensive one and kick myself for wasting the extra bucks...

Any comments would be appreciated :o

Definitely the D5100, it is well worth the extra cash for the better sensor.

If you are willing to buy second-hand lenses, you can usually pick up those bundled lenses for next to nothing. (For example, 55-200 mm VR second hand R800 http://http://www.ormsdirect.co.za/used-nikon-55-200mm-vr-sh1252, versus R3k for the lens new).

I have a D3100 for sale for R2200. If you are starting out, its perfect. Its one year old and hardly used (was my SO's). Comes with 18-55mm lens. Have been wanting to sell it for a while. Prob nice to start off with. I personally have the D5100 for 2 years now and its also a nice camera.

Thanks, would rather buy new though :)

Also look at the newly released d5300

Add to my confusion, haha!

From what I've seen, the two are very similar. If you want to spend more, I'd say go for a newer model than the D5100, even maybe the 3200. Otherwise just pick the cheapest one. It all depends on your skill and what you will use it for in the end. I enjoy my 3100 :D

I'd love to take this off your hands. Check your PM :)

The D5100 is better than the D3100, but that should be apparent from the other websites already on the net. Half a year ago, the price difference between those two was much smaller, but with the D3200's launch the D3100's price dropped. However, the D5200 and the D5300 have been launched since, and I'd be willing to bet that the D5100's price will also drop before long.

However, if you have to buy right now, the D5100 remains the better choice. I had the same decision as you a year ago, and the D5100 has proven itself the right choice over and over. The D3100 is still good, so if you really don't want to spend too much, it should still make you very happy.

It's entry level stuff. Just buy something and don't over analyse.

I didn't look at Canon much. Leaned towards the nikon for some reason. Use snapsort as they will provide other brands that are similar in price and spec

Ok thanks. Yeah had a look there but similar specced Canons are quite a bit more pricey atm. Guess I'll just opt for the Nikon then.

Those Inc Con links are Nikon demo models remember tho.
If your happy with used try plugging "canon" or "nikon" into gumtree - there's heaps to choose from.

Ya I saw thanks. They shouldn't have been abused too badly (I hope)and there is the warranty to still fall back on at least if something happens to go pear shaped.
