Nikon's D40/D60 replacement is here

both koffie and vincent have very good arguments about the d5000. when i first saw the specs on this camera it was like "wow", it still is like "wow" and i would not complain if one dropped into my lap but the d5000 does have a lot of gimmicks to it.
when i finished reading the specs yesterday i thought "this camera does everything but the pressing of the shutter button for you." does that make the d5000 a bad gimmick camera? no, i don't think so, i think it is brilliant marketing on nikon's part, it is an excellent beginner's camera and yeah i do think it will give the 500d a bit of a run for it's money (if nikkor lenses were cheaper then i think it would really give the 500d a run for it's money).
i would love to have one because of the 5 points that koffie pointed out but would i use half of the stuff on the camera no. the tilt lcd, nice and i am sure it would come in handy for those micro shots but like koffie, i am doing just fine with my adapter and to be honest i don't trust those tilt things anyway, i look at it as something else to break and then there be a need for a costly repair.
the pre-programmed settings sample photos that i have seen have actually been very nice for preprogrammed settings. would i use them, more than likely not but my s/o would be all over those pre-programmed settings (no matter how hard i try i can't get her to shoot in m, s, a or even p) and i am fairly sure she would get wonderful pictures from the pre-programmed setting just like she does now with her d60.
like vincent, while i was reading i did sort of get a feeling of it's an "old dog in new colour" though, kind of like nikon took a look at the d90 and d60 and sort of took bits of both and created the d5000 but is that bad, i don't think so, it is taking the technology that you have and building something to market to the masses and in this case i think that nikon has made a smooth move.
if i had one complaint about this camera (and the d40/d60) it would be the lack of an in focus body motor, i wish nikon would do away with producing cameras without a focus motor built in, it would mean cheaper lens prices but oh well you can't have it all at a good price.

12 Mpix sucks untill it become FF
I think ldmelsa will disagree. And if Nikons other 12MP crop bodies are anything to go by, so would I.
ldmelsa does not agree or disagree. ldmelsa lets the pics do the talking:
crop cam + kit lens

Nice detail though I'm not sure if it rates any higher than any other modern camera
I'll lend you my Spyder if you promise to return it.

You've obviously used them both, yes?

You too have a review sample.

No but I don't need to use them. Everyone knows that "equivalent" Canons are always better than the Nikons. That's why Nikon makes their cameras cheaper all the time.

great shot idmeslsa!

rorz0r, not "everyone" believes that "equivalent" canons are better than nikons.

Lol, but no matter I would rather take a couple of new lenses ove r a new body atm anyway :D
I might too but I'm itching for something along the lines of a 1DMkIII . . . ok and a new lens or two too. :)

Geez guys, do we really need this mudslinging? Can't we just be happy for more options?

If you want to fight the fanboi wars, go to the dpreview forums please.

The Red vs Yellow rivalry is awesome. You KNOW Canon is going to respond with the 60D later in the year, and after that Nikon WILL respond again... and so it goes. Like bwana says the consumer wins.

A red myself, I must say that now and again I wonder if the grass is erm more colourful on the yellow side of the fence, but fact is i'm nowhere close to mastering other aspects of my photography that it would make any difference! Maybe at a proffesional level one can say that having x feature would translate to losing or making money and that would make you chose one brand over another. Nit-picking about specs when they are on paper is meaningless.

Just got the new 5000D on my desk now, not to bad looking. I don't like the rotating LCD on the rear to much time and effort to pull out and rotate.

Going to take some test shots now will post thoughts later :D
