both koffie and vincent have very good arguments about the d5000. when i first saw the specs on this camera it was like "wow", it still is like "wow" and i would not complain if one dropped into my lap but the d5000 does have a lot of gimmicks to it.
when i finished reading the specs yesterday i thought "this camera does everything but the pressing of the shutter button for you." does that make the d5000 a bad gimmick camera? no, i don't think so, i think it is brilliant marketing on nikon's part, it is an excellent beginner's camera and yeah i do think it will give the 500d a bit of a run for it's money (if nikkor lenses were cheaper then i think it would really give the 500d a run for it's money).
i would love to have one because of the 5 points that koffie pointed out but would i use half of the stuff on the camera no. the tilt lcd, nice and i am sure it would come in handy for those micro shots but like koffie, i am doing just fine with my adapter and to be honest i don't trust those tilt things anyway, i look at it as something else to break and then there be a need for a costly repair.
the pre-programmed settings sample photos that i have seen have actually been very nice for preprogrammed settings. would i use them, more than likely not but my s/o would be all over those pre-programmed settings (no matter how hard i try i can't get her to shoot in m, s, a or even p) and i am fairly sure she would get wonderful pictures from the pre-programmed setting just like she does now with her d60.
like vincent, while i was reading i did sort of get a feeling of it's an "old dog in new colour" though, kind of like nikon took a look at the d90 and d60 and sort of took bits of both and created the d5000 but is that bad, i don't think so, it is taking the technology that you have and building something to market to the masses and in this case i think that nikon has made a smooth move.
if i had one complaint about this camera (and the d40/d60) it would be the lack of an in focus body motor, i wish nikon would do away with producing cameras without a focus motor built in, it would mean cheaper lens prices but oh well you can't have it all at a good price.
