Nikon's D40/D60 replacement is here

Whats the reason for adding a GPS to the camera?
I love knowing where I was when I took a photo (sometimes it's not obvious) and the standalone dongle I've been using is a pain when it comes to embedding the info into the EXIF. The Nikon P&S I just got has built in GPS - it does impact battery life however.

Ahhhh, so its only for additional information. Could see how that could be useful. Especially for wildlife photographers sitting in some wierd and funny places.

There was a time that photographers would take copious notes about their shoots - some probably still do. Location, time of day, weather, all sorts of things that can be important.

Looking through my old photos, the use is painfully obvious. I have loads of pictures taken at roadsides or elsewhere on my travels, that I have absolutely no clue where that was.

This is even true for some recent pictures. The first time I was in the US I took a picture of a sign (from the car) and it came out blurry. It was a pretty funny sign, so when I went there again two years later, I went looking for it. Drove around and around and never found it. GPS would have made that so easy.

I take some notes when I shoot film, and even some when I'm travelling with the digital, although it's easy taking pictures of signs etc to see what it was afterwards, something I wouldn't necessarily do with film.

Speaking of which, it would be nice if Canon get that capability, or at least a plug for the GPS module, built into their bodies. Right now, you have to buy the $759" wireless grip to plug it into.

What is interesting is, if I take my CF card, tag the images directly on it (i.e. with a card read plugged into the laptop), then shove the card back in the 40D, it shows me the coordinates :D

You dont want to see my notes for astrophotography... more so because my hand writing sucks as it is, and its even worse in pitch darkness :D, But that of course isn't needed anymore with digital at all, so I can fully understand the gps uses
