Nitrogen vs compressed air in tyres tested

scam scam scam, just another way to fleece people into paying extra for something you dont need,
but I suppose the Tire shop has to make money somewhere. those fancy building/equipment and free coffee dont pay for themselves,

same like taking your car to be serviced at the dealer, they have to find "something" to generate a profit,
either the old favorite, Brake/Clutch skimming, Wipers, or Battery voltage too low.

otherwise, how much profit can they make from the usual stuff? Oil/Sparks/Filters,
they got to make some more profit off your stupidity,

There's good evidence that higher % of oxygen at higher air pressure is good for you.
 
Amazing to see how different the views are here and how strongly people feel.

Personal experience - I switched to Nitrogen. I'm under no illusion that it's 100% Nitrogen in my tyres.

The difference I've noticed:

  • My tyres "feel" cooler after a long drive - based on this article, looks like this may just be in my head

  • The biggest difference I've noticed is that I don't have to fill my tyres as often - when I had air, I was filling them once a month. Now, I go at least 3 months without needing to top up (to clarify, I have the pressure checked at different garages and the pressure has not reduced).

Topping up air really isn't a train smash. Takes an extra minute or 2 when filling up the car. It's not like you have to pay for the air either, where you do for nitrogen.
 
I have had many heated debates on this topic with the more petrol headed friends and colleagues. My conclusions always came to that once you believe in snake oil, nothing can change your point of view, even when presented with sound arguments refuting the benefits of using nitrogen.

I wish I saved the article I once read on the debate of N2 vs Air in tyres, where a university engineering faculty teamed up with a car rental company. They chose a car rental company to have a good sample of various driving styles, road conditions and weather. They filled up the rental cars' tyres just as in the MBB test and their conclusion was that the cost of having to fill the tyres with nitrogen and the inconvenience of locating a service station that caters for filling with nitrogen, far outweighs any benefits you may have gained from doing so.

As mentioned in other posts, there are good reasons for airplanes and racing cars to do so, but for the average Joe it would not be much of an advantage.

The tyres 'feeling' colder is unscientific, and anecdotal at best. If you need to fill your tyres with more air once a month you have an issue with them.

100% - just an observation that I've noticed.

Just to note, I got my tyres fill with Nitrogen for free at a petrol station, I tipped the guy - but I tip them whenever I fill up

Weird though that when I switched to Nitrogen, suddenly don't need to...

You're like my friends haha! I often see their tyres look 'pap' and they say they always forget to check. Not sure how you forget when the guys always say "oil, water, tyres?"
