I am all for hush hush but this could drasticly make everyones experience with usenet better... so bear with me.

Telkom get there traffic through Giganews right, so then telkom cant be paying full price for the int. BW, do u think that giganews has set up servers on that little backbone that we can axcess thru local BW

I think its called atar or somthing like that.

Do you think we could petition giganews to provide end user hosting on that backbone so that we could use our local cap on there unshaped reliable servers...

I dont think Giganews went and setup any local anything. Telkom is just mirroring their servers and since they control the SAT3 cable mostly they dont need to pay the price.

Monopolisitc ftw

Paying who? Themselves? ;)

You two are wrong, telkom still needs to guy bandwidth from the other side, and giganews is useing a backbone that can be axessed with our local to transfer to the saix nntp server, the same backbone that www.nvidia.com for an example is hosted on, that is why we can get www.nvidia.com localy

I'm sure telkom (AKA SAIX) has interconnect arrangements with all first tier ISPs and pays very little.

BTW - As a leading shareholder of the SAT3 and SAFE cables they dictate the cost of bandwidth in SA.

Ja, we explored this option in that thread quoted above. The Akamia servers are not what Giganews is using to provide the NNTP feed to anybody... Akamai is for content duplication feeding HTTP, not NNTP. It is not designed for that (and Akamai servers are bloody expensive anyway). We asked Giganews and they said they are not using Akamai.

One hopeful piece of info is that the owners of Newshost are negotiating with Giganews to provide another (commercial) local mirror for us to use. Let's pray that something comes of that! :)
