OK, new solution - 3 x 3.5mm to RCA cables to run analogue 5.1 to the receiver. Will test when they arrive, but I don't see why it shouldn't work.

Should be fine. You'll just have to tweak the individual levels on the PC to balance the outputs.

Can you try playing it via Kodi?

Under the audio settings, it should look like the image below [found via google search].

I'll have to get Kodi, so I'll get back to you once I've done that.
Your problem probably lies with the limitations of spdif. In which case kodi wont help. There might be a codec that trancodes it to AC3 on the fly, so perhaps look for something like that.

Please do let us know if you get around to this. It looks promising - assuming they properly extract the AC3 from the EAC3 stream for devices not compatible.

If this works for you, I'll know exactly what I need to buy as my replacement media player :D

I haven't tried Kodi, but I can now report that the 3 x 3,5mm to RCA cables have arrived and been installed, and I now have 5.1 audio on EAC3 streams.

Elegant like a sledge hammer!

I may try an HDMI connection, but I think the best solution is to get a new amp. Now now, though.

I tried the same one, and one other - both failed to play in 5.1. I also tried my main desktop PC, and that failed to play anything in 5.1.

This is what I suspected. For now I'll probably re-encode the few shows I can't find in AC3, but I need to find a solution,[-] and rather than replacing my receiver with a new receiver, I might look at getting a sound card with XLR outputs and a receiver-free amp. All the receiver does at the moment is decode the SPDIF signal, amplify it, and push it out to the speakers - I don't use any switching or equalising - I use the power and volume buttons only.[/-] OK, new solution - 3 x 3.5mm to RCA cables to run analogue 5.1 to the receiver. Which Realtek card are you using?
hack your driver! I did!
Dts or dolbly will constantly be displayed on your amp.
