Football fans in SA face the stark prospect of missing the Africa Cup of Nations due to the SABC's continuing ineptitude.

Sport Five, the marketing company that sells the rights for Confederation of African Football events, and the SABC have reached a stalemate in negotiations that would allow the public broadcaster the rights to the tournament.

Another sterling job from the public broadcaster!

Let's see how pissed off the general public are when the ANC's support of SABC causes them to miss the African Cup of Nations. Quickest way to lose votes is to screw up the sports broadcasts!

Oh well, not like South Africa was competing anyway, eh?

would there have been that much interest anyway given South Africa did not qualify? i'm not too sure it such a bad decision. which advertisers will feel they will get massive ausiences for the games?

Hopefully Supersport will show the games in SA.

Nope.

Fans and industry insiders were hopeful that subscription channel SuperSport would agree a last-ditch deal with Sport Five to televise AFCON in South Africa.

But their communications manager, Clinton van der Berg, told Sowetan: "We will only televise the matches in other parts of Africa and not in South Africa."

they wouldn't be bailing SABC out. they would be buying it for those who are subscribers to their platform.

Shocking on DSTV's part.

Why? It obviously doesn't make financial sense to them at this late stage. They have done no promotion for the event whatsoever and they haven't exactly got sponsors lined up for it so what would the point be?

Looks liek SABC will be showing the games:

Johannesburg - The SABC would broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations starting from Sunday, the state broadcaster said on Saturday.

"It has been agreed that the Africa Cup of Nations would be broadcast on SABC1 from Sunday night with the first match between Angola and Mali at 21:00," said spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago.

I'll be watching tonight, hopefully they really do show the game.

Money i would imagine.

I think supersport was always going to show the games, not sure why i thought otherwise.

Why is everything an uphill struggle with the guys?

Why is every decision made by SABC always seen to be political?

Can't they make a commercial decision about not showing it and then just live with or learn from incorrect decisions...if it is in fact incorrect from a ratings perspective...without having to bow to vocal minority pressure every time?

That's how it seems to work elsewhere.
